Woman alleges she was promised car for votes

The Georgia secretary of state’s office is investigating an allegation of vote-buying in the Democratic runoff for Richmond County sheriff.

Sheriff Ronnie Strength said his investigators forwarded information Tuesday to the secretary of state after a preliminary investigation into a complaint made by a 23-year-old Augusta woman against a person campaigning for school public safety Lt. Richard Roundtree.

The woman, Latasha Moore, said she was at a Roundtree campaign event Aug. 18 at the Dogwood Terrace public housing area and was approached by Jerry Lee Jordan, according to a sheriff’s report.

Moore said Jordan promised her a car if she could persuade four other people to vote for Roundtree in the Aug. 21 runoff between him and sheriff’s Capt. Scott Peebles.

Moore told police she encouraged several people to vote for Roundtree and “obtained election certificates from the poll workers” to prove they had voted. Moore said that when she was finally able to make contact with Jordan, she was told she wouldn’t get a car “because the candidate had lost by 1,000 votes,” the report said.

The sheriff said Moore complained to police that she didn’t receive the car that was promised.

Strength said investigators sent the case to the secretary of state’s office for further investigation.

Jared Thomas, a spokesman for Secretary of State Brian Kemp, confirmed that the information had been received Tuesday and an investigation had been opened.

Roundtree said he was not familiar with the allegation and that he wanted to read the police report before commenting further.

Reached by phone Tuesday, Moore said she was upset that the media was calling her and “knocking on my door.”

She said she didn’t want her name used in a police report and would not cooperate with any investigation.

“I told the sheriff that when I gave him all those papers,” she said. “I ain’t going to do it.”

Moore refused to say more and hung up. She did not return messages left on her voice mail seeking further comment.

Jordan’s wife, Cushena Jordan, said her husband had surgery Tuesday and wasn’t able to speak. She said she knew Moore as a customer of her business, U Wanna Ride Used Cars on Deans Bridge Road.

Jordan said the allegations were false and that she and her husband had asked everyone at the event to bring people they knew to the polls to vote for Roundtree. She said that when Moore said she didn’t have a car, her husband said to “get a down payment and come see me,” not that he would give her a car for votes.

“Anybody who knows my husband knows he don’t give away nothing,” she said.

Jordan said she has consulted with a lawyer and intends to file a complaint against Moore for slander.

She said she was upset that the report had been sent to the secretary of state when no sheriff’s investigators had spoken with her husband.

“Nobody has talked to us about it before tonight,” she said.

Richard Miesse makes a good

Richard Miesse makes a good point. Already have a mess and proliferation of crime in Augusta and to have someone say they aren't locking people up is a slap in the face for the honest, working citizens in the community. But then again the Republican candidate is saying the SAME thing.

Patty...

So does that mean you would support Roundtree because he doesn't want to overcrowd the jail system? That's not what I understood by your previous posts.

That's not what I said at

That's not what I said at all. I said they already have a crime problem and to let people slide is unethical and wrong. The laws are written for a reason. I don't support any candidate that would allow someone to committ a crime and not do their job. That goes for any of them. For all I care build a bigger jail.

Patty...from your previous

Patty...from your previous posts I felt that was your position, however you seemed to dismiss Sanders as being in the same mold as Roundtree. If you look at this quote "Sanders said he intends to aggressively enforce the law and “lock up these thieves and lock up these burglars and lock up these people that are committing these violent crimes.” Some have said they felt he was going to be too aggressive...(see BeachGirl's comment)

I don't see it as being

I don't see it as being aggressive. The aggressor is the criminal. I recently saw a statement that Sanders said he doesn't believe in locking people up for non-violent crimes. Some may feel a burglaries, or theft is a non-violent crime. I believe it is a crime and is punishable by law - or it's SUPPOSED to be. There is too much talk about NOT arresting in a city that has a major problem with crime already.

Plots like this will motivate a lot of people to vote for Roundtree.
This is a plus for Rountree. I am going to join the Roundtree Camp and make a big donation to his campaign.
Vote for tree, the sheriff to be!!!!!

lol...my point palmetto, is I don't agree with their mindset. Crime committed? Arrest, hold the perpetrator responsible for their actions. Period.

Patty...I expect the sherrif

Patty...I expect the sherrif to be aggresive in pursuit of criminals regardless of jail population. I guess we see Sander's postion differently. It seems to me Sander's position, more closely parallel's yours than that of Roundtree.
Main thing...we need a sheriff....we already have enough politicians.

When a person kicks a door

When a person kicks a door down in a home, ransacks it, and steals thousands of dollars of jewelry, electronics, etc., I'll pay the extra taxes to take people like that off the streets. People who are against it have never been through it.

Sheriff Ronnie Strength ran

Sheriff Ronnie Strength ran as a Democrat and on Monday he endorsed Republican sheriff candidate Freddie Sanders and on Tuesday he forwarded a baseless complaint against Roundtree to the secretary of state. And now Augustans are waiting on Richmond County Mayor Deke Copenhaver to get his head out of Azziz buttock and endorse Sanders too.

Yeah, Deke is another one I want to see give an endorsement. But you realize comments like this will cause his autostart to get his car moving towards the beach again. He says he's out of cell phone range before he hits the Gnat Line.

Exactly! Patty

"When a person kicks a door down in a home, ransacks it, and steals thousands of dollars of jewelry, electronics, etc., I'll pay the extra taxes to take people like that off the streets. People who are against it have never been through it."

You, me, and a lot of other people would too. If a guy steals a bicycle out of my yard, maybe a boot camp is in order; but if they kick my door in and invade my home, nothing less than prison time is appropriate.

Radio Program

Yesterday on the radio, Austin Rhodes hinted that Latasha Moore had some text messages from Jordan about the automobile and the vote buying. But the update to this story indicates that Moore will not co-operate with the Secretary of State; so this story is ended.

Update

The update to yesterday's original story makes it clear that no investigation will be done by the Secretary of State:

Reached by phone Tuesday, Latasha Moore said she was upset that the media was calling her and “knocking on my door.” She said she didn’t want her name used in a police report and would not cooperate with any investigation. “I told the sheriff that when I gave him all those papers,” she said. “I ain’t going to do it.” Moore refused to say more and hung up. She did not return messages left on her voice mail seeking further comment.

I'm assuming "all those papers" are the certificates of voting slips that the poll workers will give you upon request to show that you have voted. They have the name of the voter, the date, a statement that the person voted, and the signature of the poll worker.

Hatred of U.S. Citizens aganst each other

I cringe when I read the hateful comments that most of you can sit down and write in a paper for all to see.

Let me say first of all that any person who would agree to give their vote for a car is a criminal and should be arrested. I do not believe that any business person would agree to give away a car for (4) votes, if so he/she would be out of business in a few minutes.

I have been reading all of the nasty comments posted especially against those who vote Democratic and you should be ashamed. People have a right to vote their choice and it is not your right to voice "your" nastiness because of their vote.

I am so sick of the hatred and lies I have heard out of your mouths or read. Hatred is part of mans nature, but God gives us the Holy Spirit to control that nature. So many of you have lost control and you need to get back right with God's spirit.

I don't know of any individual who gets anything free because they are a member of the GOP or DNC, people get things out of need, although there are abuses to any system.

These wrongs can and should be corrected without hate. Augusta and the U.S. will never move forward unless we find a way to get back on our knees and pray, we all need to do that.

I prefer to believe in the good of people and not in the bad. I say arrest this woman for filing this report if it is proven she lied...it sounds very suspicious. I hope the truth prevails and all of us please think, before you say anything. Very sad to see such hate in the U.S., my country.
