Richard Roundtree narrowly defeated Scott Peebles in the Democratic runoff for Richmond County sheriff Tuesday, by doing what few expected – persuading almost 2,000 more supporters to come to the polls than had on July 31.

Richard Roundtree receives a congratulatory hug after learning he won the Democratic runnoff for Richmond County sheriff.

Roundtree got 13,712 votes (50.83 percent), while Peebles received 13,265 votes (49.17 percent), according to unofficial vote totals of the Richmond County Board of Elections. Roundtree will face Republican sheriff’s primary winner Freddie Sanders in the November general election.

Roundtree said the vote was a “nailbiter,” but the results, in his opinion, are a validation for the city of Augusta.

“I think the citizens of Augusta responded and said we’re not going to let them dictate our destiny,” Roundtree said.

The poll numbers tell the story. Roundtree, a schools public safety lieutenant, garnered 1,968 more votes than his July 31 primary total, but for Peebles, a sheriff’s captain, his total diminished by 673 votes.

Roundtree said after the unofficial results were posted that his biggest fear was disappointing his team and the citizens of Augusta. Going forward to November, Roundtree said, his message and his vision for innovating the sheriff’s office will remain the same.

He agreed that he was the underdog going into the race and facing off against a candidate with more support, endorsements and money.

“They threw everything they had at us, but we held our heads high,” he said.

Kyterian Jones said he supports Roundtree because of his views on education and youth and the wealth of law enforcement experience he can bring to the sheriff’s position. Roundtree believes in second chances, he said.

“He is the best qualified candidate,” Jones said.

The final total hit like a collective body blow at Peebles’ watch party on Azalea Drive. Stunned supporters stared at the figures and gasped.

Peebles was quick to make a short speech after the finally tally was posted.

“Our opponent ran a great race and he pulled it off tonight,” he said. “We need to look forward to the future and move forward together. I don’t want anybody to be antagonistic about it. Let’s have a positive attitude and do what’s best for this city and get behind whoever wins this election.”

Peebles said what he had feared would happen came to pass.

“Our folks just didn’t come out,” he said. “I knew there was that danger, and that is what happened.”

Helen Blocker-Adams, a Peebles supporter, said voters became too complacent and expected Peebles to win without trouble.

“They thought we got it in the bag,” she said. “They took it for granted.”

Blocker-Adams said Roundtree worked hard the past three weeks to motivate his base and it worked.

“He got real creative with what he had and hit hard, hit hard, hit hard,” she said.

She expects a similar result in November with Roundtree defeating Sanders in the general election.

“For all intents and purposes, Richard Roundtree is the next sheriff of Richmond County,” Blocker-Adams said.

Sad Day for RC

Here is who I blame. Patty Strength for pushing her brother for a job he had no hope of getting. Charles Webster for still thinking he had some juice with his "South Side Mafia". Robbie Silas for not coming out and actively supporting Scott Peebles. Finally, Ronnie Strength for not coming out in support of Scott initially. I don't see Freddie Sanders being able to win. There is blood in the water now and the Roundtree supports can smell it. So you reap what you sew.

A Few Points For the Peebles' Campaign

The constant emphasis of Lewis Blanchard, a former big club owner, being a supporter didn't help. Today, we saw a comment where he is the Assistant Coordinator for the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and how all the RCSO officers support HIM, for goodness sakes.

Well come to find out the Waynesboro Police Chief who came up with the bogus endorsement is THE coordinator of that program.

Then we have Nicholson with all his connections being the official campaign manager.

Lastly, we have the Joe Jackson contribution, wink, that most knew what was really happening.

Now man up, straighten-up and fly right.

Congrats

Congrats to Round tree for enduring this tough race thus far. Just because the candidate you voted for didn't win doesn't mean you have to speak ill of the one who did. We should all pray for the best and I'm sure either candidate will do their very best to be successful in the position.

Congratulations Roundtree

If it wasn't for Austin using his code phrase of wanting the" right man" to win, I probably wouldn't have gotten out of my bed to vote. I wonder how many more folks were motivated by Austin's code phrase. LOL.

SeenIt makes a good point about ramming a candidate down the throat. She tried to tell you, too. About the photo of Tree celebrating, were there only black people present?

Grand Pa Jones, I have it on good authority that Austin is ticked so much he is emailing certain Peebles' foes who expressed their concerns right here and he is even using bad words. Heh, heh, heh.

Well Crap

For what it's worth, I was glad when a Black man was elected once before (and I didn't vote for him) because I thought ," good we got that done". No more "we have never had a black president". Whew, that's done and he seem s like a good, intelligent guy, so what can go wrong? Who knew he was a socialist wannabe dictator.

So now, Richmond County mimics the National stage. hmmmm, who will be Tree's Reverend Wright, George Soros, Saul Alinsky, etc...

Pull behind and push with the shoulder for Freddie Sanders. I truly believe this election is a dictate and mandate for the city of Augusta. This is our finest hour ( to quote Churchill). Augustan (Black White or Turquose) Together we stand, Divided we fall . Time to put up or shut up.

Excuse me while I step out. I have to stick my finger dowm my throat.
I will come back and let's talk about the first thing that comes up.

Well it just goes to show

Well it just goes to show what happens when the Democrat regime sends the Caddies and Lincolns into inner city neighorhoods to get the dead people out to vote. Now does one understand why the Democrats are so opposed to the PhotoID law when it comes to voting.

Information?

Does anybody know where I can go to find unbiased factual information on both Roundtree and Sanders? If I'm going to vote in November I would like to make an educated vote. No sense in wasting it.

Ramming?

You call it ramming? everyone had an Opportunity to vote no one was rammed down anyones throat. So one picture of black people around a tree? what about the areas that are not black areas. people saw a republican who switched parties with republican backed money. Peebles advertising is everywhere including huge billboards to Roundtrees little lawn signs. Another thing to think about more and more bigger city people are moving to Richmond County. This is the start of change in the county. I've seen this in Dade County and embraced the change. Get ready people.

Actually, Countyman was right

Actually, Countyman was right a long time ago. Imagine me agreeing with him about anything. He said a while back polls showed Tree leading and reminded us not to get on the Peebles' bandwagon too soon.

And the whirlpool in the toilet spins faster... OK with me; I had just as soon see Aiken and/or Columbia county take the lead and leave Augusta behind. (not hopeful for that considering the support for the hillbilly Anderson)

Sheriff should be non-partisan

The sheriff's election should be non-partisan like the county commission and school board. Party politics have no place in a local sheriff's race. The issue is that the office of sheriff is a state constitutionally mandated office. Lets urge our state legislators and governor to have this change made. Hindsight is 20-20 so they say. As we look back on our sheriff's election, just think if party politics had been removed from the equation! Instead, perhaps we would have had more meaningful debates. Are there others like me that would like to see the sheriff's election become NON-PARTISAN in Georgia? Something to think about. In my opinion, party politics need to stay in Atlanta and Washington DC, not in our neighborhoods.

Roundtree and Richmond County

It is a shame that RC can not move forward. From the White house down to Augusta, Ga. We do reap what we sow. Now you know why people are moving out of RC. If I had the money I would do the same! Richmond Cty can not prosper because it is ran by a certain group of people who keeps us surpressed.

RMward, actually Roundtree

RMward, actually Roundtree had the best academic credentials. He got his BS degree in 1990 and had a Masters Degree. Peebles just got his BS degree from an extension college last year.
