Columbia County Republican chairman announces bid for school board

  • Follow Elections

A high-ranking Columbia County Republican announced his intent Monday to run for a seat on the board of education.

County party Chairman Brian Slowinski said in a press release that he intends to run for the District 1 school board seat currently held by Wayne Bridges.

Residents of District 1 are served by Greenbrier High, Lakeside High, Greenbrier Middle, Lakeside Middle, Riverside Middle, Stallings Island Middle, Blue Ridge Elementary, River Ridge Elementary, Riverside Elementary, South Columbia Elementary and Stevens Creek Elementary schools.

Slowinski and his wife have six adopted children in the school system, according to the release.

The announcement comes at a time when Bridges might not be legally allowed to mount a re-election bid.

A year after Bridges won re-election to another four-year term on the board in 2008, state lawmakers passed an antinepotism law. It bans family of board of education members from serving as school administrators or on the staff of the system’s central office.

Bridges’ wife, Mary, is the assistant principal at Martinez Elementary School.

The Columbia County school board last year approved as a formality a nepotism policy that matched the state law.

At the time of passage, Bridges and Superintendent Charles Nagle said they intend to seek advice from lawyers on Bridges’ eligibility to seek re-election. There has been no subsequent discussion of the issue in public meetings.

Phone messages left Tuesday morning for Bridges and Nagle were not immediately returned.

"A high-ranking Columbia

"A high-ranking Columbia County Republican"? That's a stretch. Other than alienating the Columbia County GOP Executive Board, and, causing through his ineptitude and tyrannical behavior seven of its members (one former state legislator and one past Chairman) to resign, HE, Brian Slowinski, nominated a former president of the Young Democrats of Augusta to be on the Board. Aha, perhaps he did this to appeal to Democrats. But a true Chairman would never do such a thing, so he probably alienated the County's Republicans. One thing is certain, he is one who works well with others.

Donnie wrote, "Slowinski and his wife have six adopted children in the school system, according to the release." If they are "in the system", how can he homeschool? I sent an email to Slowinski a month ago telling him of TWO errors on the CCGOP website that he refused to address: candidates names are in alphabetical order, but, he has two out of order; he has, "Please send any Links for other announced Candidates to:...so we can put there links on the website!" I informed him that proper Standard English mandates that it should read, "...their links on the website". But he never ever corrected a single thing. I asked him and his Ethics Committee Chairman months ago and multiple times for the disposition of something I submitted in August, and, for a copy of the meeting minutes for all meetings in which the issue was discussed. They refused. What guys. Can you imagine this attitude on the school board?

jbartley, were you present

jbartley, were you present for Slowinski's last two conventions? The first one's registration was a holy mess and people had to register twice. Then the latest debacle featured him driving asleep at the wheel while trying to run a convention. How long in advance did he know about the meeting? It's pretty funny, and, I understand that some of the last convention was captured on a few smartphones. If Wayne Bridges does not run, we need to find quality candidates to run, or at least one solid candidate because Slowinski will just take up space and cause friction as is his style.
