Richmond County sheriff’s Capt. Scott Peebles said he will make an announcement at 10 a.m. Monday on the steps in front of the Augusta-Richmond County Judicial Center and John H. Ruffin Jr. Courthouse, 735 James Brown Blvd.

It has been widely reported that Peebles would run for sheriff so long as sitting Sheriff Ronnie Strength did not run for re-election. Strength announced Friday he will not.

Richmond County School Safety Lt. Richard Roundtree, a former sheriff’s investigator, also has said he would run. Strength’s brother-in-law, Lt. Robbie Silas, has expressed interest as well. Silas is expected to make that announcement Tuesday.

During his retirement announcement Friday, Strength hinted that someone else within the sheriff’s office had expressed interest, but he declined to say who.

This community would be very

This community would be very well served by Captain Peebles. With his experience, education, training, integrity and leadership, he is prepared to take Richmond County to the next level.

It is clear that Sheriff Strength supports Captain Peebles as he has lead all of the major operations for the Sheriff's Office in the past couple of years resulting in many felony arrests and convictions as well as the removal of many drugs and guns from our area. With violent crime at its lowest level in 7 years combined with a major reduction in burglaries due to strategic placement of the burglary task force, he has proven he can get the job done and do it well.

We need a visionary leader who we can trust implicitly to take a good department and make it far better and there is no clearer choice that Captain Peebles.

Captain Scott Pebbles has

Captain Scott Pebbles has done a poor job with solving cold case murders in Richmond County( two black teenagers girls murdered bodies found by the railroad track off Laney Walker, no suspects) and his bid for Sheriff will fall short.

Its time for Richmond County

Its time for Richmond County to elect its first black Sheriff, Major Ken Autry who oversees Captain Pebbles and all violent crimes and drug operation.

I'm curious why Maj. Autry is not running? He's the most superior of all the candidates and appears to be the best to me. But I readily admit I'm an outsider.

@RM — You have got to have the fire in the belly to run for sheriff. Perhaps Autry does not.

River, as LL says, it takes a huge "fire in the belly" and a lot of passion to take on this monumental task. Working 24/7, 50% of the people disagree and talk about you no matter what you do, etc. etc.

As for the Sheriff supporting Scott Peebles; that is very clear and that is why I said supporting instead of endorsing. If his brother in law were not to get in the race then you would see the endorsement as he all but said on TV the other night. And, all of those as Sylvia Cooper said have known for months the Sheriff was not running again also are fully aware of whom he believes is the most qualified person to lead the agency.

I hope and pray that the registered voters of Richmond County do their homework on the three "main" candidates. As far as Major Ken Autry goes, I hope he decides to throw his name in the hat. Major Autry is the best candidate for this County and this Department. He would serve this community very WELL.

Remember that in Georgia, the

Remember that in Georgia, the office of sheriff is designated partisan. Therefore, each candidate must declare a party when qualifying. Presumably Shaft will declare Democrat. Peeples will need to play his strategy carefully. Should he run as a Democrat against Roundtree in July or qualify as a Republican and run against Roundtree in November?

Maj. Autry has never, ever

Maj. Autry has never, ever wanted to be Sheriff...actually laughs out loud at the prospect...does not want the headaches.
As I said last week...with Peebles declaring as a Democrat...there will likely be someone, one of the longtime veterans of the dept., who will quietly qualify as a Republican in the event that Peebles does not make it out of the Dem primary.

IF Peebles wins the Dem primary, that person will withdraw. IF Peebles does not win the primary, that person will push forward.

@LL. Thank you. As far as the candidates (Re: Democratic or Republican) I am NOT interested.....I am not a politician. My concerns are: WHO is the best candidate. WHO will represent the Richmond County Sheriffs Office in the BEST and POSITIVE way. WHO is there for the citizens of Richmond County. The employees of Richmond County do NOT need an egoistical leader. The citizens of Richmond County deserve a confident and caring leader! Someone who will add deputies to the patrol division. Someone who will add deputies to the jail. Someone who will NOT show partiality within the ranking structure of the Sheriff's Office. Someone that the employees can TRUST. A leader where the citizens can come forward and voice their concerns about their community and then see some results. Sheriff Webster and Sheriff Strength met these obligations and then some. I have A LOT of concern for the future of Richmond County (citizens and employees). Richmond County does NOT have a worthy candidate yet!

The tradition in Richmond

The tradition in Richmond County elections up to now is that all sheriff candidates ran as Democrats. But in 2008, Ronnie Strength dodged a bullet in the July primary election. What was that bullet? Well, in May, 2008, Democratic party chairman Lowell Greenbaum escorted Jimmy Lee Sullivan into the board of elections office to register Sullivan to run against Ronnie Strength in the primary. The thinking was that Sullivan (black) would win in a cakewalk against Strength (white) because most of the white voters would be voting in the Republican primary because there were two or three real contests there. The trouble was that Sullivan did not have a required document — a certified copy of his high school diploma if I remember correctly.

Here are some links to the story:

Sandy Hodson

Sylvia Cooper

This year, 2012, we will have a sho ’nuff barn burner in the July Republican primary — the four-way race for U.S. Congressman. Most of white Augusta will be voting there, making a Democrat primary race difficult for Peeples.

Austin, so you are saying there's some type of collusion between some in the RCSO to keep certain people from becoming Sheriff? I think you said the other day some said they would resign if someone they didn't like won. It sounds like lots of manipulation going on instead of everyone being honest and just running on their own merits.

As LL says and stories in

As LL says and stories in other places, Richmond County is going to turn out in the Republican primary to prevent Lee Anderson from getting the nomination. That's going to hurt white candidates running for Sheriff as a Democrat.

Using Austin's scenario, it

Using Austin's scenario, it would also be interesting if more than one person decides to run as a Republican. This thing could get wild.
