Billy Badger voted Thursday afternoon at the Board of Elections office. The advance voting period ends today.

Advance voting began Feb. 13. For the first time in Georgia, a Saturday advance voting day was added, but Board of Elections Executive Director Lynn Bailey said turnout was low. The period was reduced from 45 days in previous years to 22 days this year.

Through Thursday, 703 voters had turned out for the three-week advance voting period at the Board of Elections main office. At the Henry Brigham and Warren Road community centers, 889 votes were cast this week and Saturday.

“Advance voting has been about what we anticipated it would be for this election, and that is slow,” Bailey said.

In addition to the presidential preference primary, the ballot includes two referendum items.

The questions include whether Sunday retail sales of beer, wine and spirits should be allowed in Augusta-Richmond County. The second item is whether the Richmond County Board of Education can continue to levy a 1 percent sales tax for capital improvements.

ADVANCE VOTING WILL END TODAY

Today is the last day for advance voting in Richmond County before the presidential preference primary. Three polling locations are open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

• Board of Elections Office, 530 Greene St.

• Henry Brigham Community Center, 2463-A Golden Camp Road

• Warren Road Community Center, 300 Warren Road
