Augusta lawyer Wright McLeod announced Tuesday his plan to seek the 12th Congressional District seat, bringing the Augusta-area field of official contenders for the redrawn district to three.

Wright McLeod: Augusta lawyer will run against contractor Rick Allen and state Rep. Lee Anderson for the Republican nomination.

McLeod, a retired Navy commander who flew F-14 Tomcat missions during Operation Desert Storm, is a real estate lawyer based in Columbia County involved with management of homeowners associations.

“I refuse to accept the premise that my generation is going to turn over to our children a country that is worse off than
what was given to us,” said McLeod, 47.

Acknowledging that the last election he won was for Westside High School student council president, McLeod likened his campaign to that of late U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood, a dentist in whose backyard pool McLeod said he learned to swim.

Norwood’s widow, Gloria, will serve as McLeod’s honorary campaign chairwoman, he said.

Gloria Norwood “was the first person that I went to after I decided to run,” McLeod said. “Her advice, her input, her intuition are invaluable to somebody in my position.”

Augusta contractor Rick Allen and Grovetown state Rep. Lee Anderson are also seeking the Republican nomination to run against U.S. Rep. John Barrow, a Democrat serving his fourth term.

The 12th District’s boundaries were redrawn by the state Legislature this year to exclude Barrow’s Savannah address and include more of Richmond, Columbia and McDuffie counties.

McLeod is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a master’s degree from Georgetown University and a juris doctorate from University of Georgia School of Law.

He and his wife of 23 years, Sheri, have three daughters.

McLeod said he expects the Republican primary field to grow before the July primary, but that he is the candidate who can beat Barrow.

he screwed up our neighborhood also. Then they fired him. be good at what your good at. stick to being an attorney not an association manager. They are not setup to manage associations. Only set up to handle simple real estate closings. Thanks goose!

Interesting comments, and while I hate to go against a fellow vet, I want to hear more from this lawyer and veteran. The truth comes out with the comments on the Chronicle.

Commander McLeod closed a home sale for me a few months ago and I couldn't have been happier with his work and that of his staff. I look forward to hearing what he has to say in the campaign.

One of the most upstanding

One of the most upstanding men in Augusta... getting into politics for the right reasons with the law experience to back that up. Perfect for the 12th district and absolutely is the best candidate so far to run against Barrow.

Maybe I caught him on a really really bad week, but I would down a bottle of Pepto Bismol and vote Democrat before I would vote for him.

In my experience, he would be the prototypical politician, and that's why I wouldn't trust him with my trash, much less a seat in Congress.

I shudder to think that people would vote for or against someone for U.S. House Representative based on how their staff handles home closing paperwork!

Wow, If you have ever spent

Wow, If you have ever spent anytime speaking with Mr. McLeod, you would immediately realize what a considerate and kind-hearted man he is. He is exactly the kind of representative who has an "outside the box" fresh, conservative way of thinking that is refreshing in this current political climate.

By the way, Mr. McLeod's firm has represented my neighborhood for over 2 years now, and our neighborhood has been completely happy with him and his team. I've also bought and sold three homes with him as my Attorney.

Thanks, Mr. McLeod, for making the sacrifice to stand up and try and serve the 12th District. It's easy to sit back and arm-chair quarterback. It takes real strength to put your hat in the ring!

I couldn't agree more with Little Lamb! We all have our good and bad days, you can't please everyone all the time! Wright is the most generous, kind-hearted person I know and I think he will do great!
To the rest of the negative people, who left negative comments: Lets see what you're made of...If you think you can do so much better then you should have stepped up and ran for office!!! Just saying....

whiteflight, If you're

whiteflight, If you're sitting in either seat of an F-14, you're a pilot.

As to the issues with his company's service, did you talk with him to address your perception of poor service? Pot shots from the anominity of a keyboard speaks clearly as to one's credibility, or lack thereof.

Also, Riverman1, a few negative comments from such a small cross section of the populace shouldn't be the litmus test for our decisions.
I've found Mr. McLeod to be a man of character and integrity. Unless a real skeleton is found, or he turns out to be a closet liberal, he'll have my support. Having talked personally with him before his decision to run, I know full well he's not liberal.

I think I might be a little uneasy with a person who uses "commander" as his salutation. I can just hear it now as a new client comes into McLeod's office:

“Hello, I'm Wright McLeod, but you can just call me ‘Commander.’”

"follower" unless you are

"follower" unless you are controling the movements of the aircraft with a stick in your hand you are not by "Navy" standards a pilot. Trust me i was with the Navy for many years. Wright always portrays himself as a former "pilot" which is very misleading. He was a navigator not a pilot. Im not saying he isnt capable of flying but rather he is misleading people and if he is willing to mislead about that then what else is he not telling us about himself. What someones staff does to handle a real estate closing doesnt qualify them to run for office. I hear much more negative than positive about him in the area related to his law practice and him personally. THis will probalby split the vote between he and Rick Allen and result in Lee winning. Not a bad result as long as Barrow doesnt get it. Allen has my vote!!

Little Lamb, using his rank

Little Lamb, using his rank was just something Harley did because Harley is a retired colonel. I'm sure McLeod doesn't use the title. I might even call Harley colonel one of these days.

As to Follower's comments that a few negative comments from such a small cross section of the populace shouldn't be the litmus test for our decisions, it's not. I am undecided and will read ALL the comments and articles before I do. He does have a lot going for him the others don't in my opinion. He's a retired military officer, academy grad and an attorney (forgive me, I have a lawyer in the family, heh). He has been thoroughly vetted along those lines while the other two Republicans have certain problems.

But McLeod may present a difficult personality at times if the comment above is accurate. You are right, it was anecdotal at best. I'm sure more comments will come in and we'll get a better idea as time goes by.

I see the issue of McLeod

I see the issue of McLeod being a Naval Flight Officer as opposed to a pilot as hogwash. He was flying in the two man aircraft. I'd say it's pretty natural for a navigator to discuss his experiences by saying I flew this and that type aircraft. It could be the reporter even got it wrong.

Little lamb posted “Hello, I'm Wright McLeod, but you can just call me ‘Commander.’”

Typically, quotation marks are used to indicate the person quoted actually made the statement between the marks. Unless you actually heard him make that statement, or saw it written with his byline, then quoting him as saying it is both unfair to him and misleading to those who see the quote.

Anyway....he didn't use the term "commander" around me. I used it because I am aware he is a retired Navy Commander and I'm also aware that even though he's retired it is a perfectly appropriate and respectful form of address. He may choose not to use it himself and for all I know that's the case here. The point is he didn't and shouldn't be quoted as if he had.

I'm not so sure mocking the use of an appropriate military title adds much to the discussion anyway.

Wrong rank for me, Harley. I

Wrong rank for me, Harley. I was long gone with my twenty years and out when you guys were still playing Army.

But still thinking about this issue of navigator v. pilot, if anyone asked me what type plane I flew somewhere, I'd probably say I flew in a 747, etc. However, if I were the pilot of anything I'd advise everyone to eject, including myself.

Harley, I loved the Army, but some professions are best on the outside to maximize things for yourself is all I'll say. It appears McLeod retired early too and retrained with law school. He wasn't admitted to the Bar until 2000.

I just heard McLeod being

I just heard McLeod being interviewed on the radio and he seemed pretty down to earth and knowledgeable. He would certainly represent us better than one candidate. Mrs. Charlie Norwood supports him. Still it's going to take some doing to get this thing from Lee Anderson with all his Columbia County friends who are enthusiastic about him.

I have known Wright for 11

I have known Wright for 11 years. He has handled business for me personally and professionally. He is one of the finest individuals I know. I always refer business to him without hesitation. I have found him to be down to earth, honest, and compassionate in all his dealings with me and my clients. I could not think of a better person to represent the people of this community with their best interest at heart than Wright !!

WhiteFlight (Wed. 11:27)

WhiteFlight (Wed. 11:27) predicts that McLeod will take votes away from Rick Allen, but Riverman (Wed. 4:52) predicts that McLeod will take votes away from Lee Anderson. I guess we are setting up for an interesting primary. Of course we are sitting here with blinders on thinking merely about metro Augusta. The district has a lot of rural voters.

After reading all of the

After reading all of the comments made about Wright McLeod I had to put in my two-cents. First, I believe if you were trained as a Radar Intercept Officer (RIO, "Goose") I believe that you are still trained as a Pilot.
I met Wright McLeod back in 2005 while he was still in the Navy Reserve "flying the F-14 Tomcat before the Navy retired the plane. He never told me that he "flew" it, he stated that he flew in the Tomcat. However, I would have given anything to have the chance of flying in the Legendary F-14 Tomcat built by Grumman. He helped my wife and I with a Real Estate problem. We had a Seller that refused to return our earnest money with ahouse that we had under contract. Wright stepped in a wrote a demand letter and every dollar was return, all $3,000 of it. Oh, and by the way Wright did not charge me for this.

Several years later I became a commercial real estate agent and he & I have have closed a few commercial properties together.

It is very easy for anyone to find something wrong with any candidate. What is not easy is actually running for office. What is funny to me is that when it comes to Liberals running for office it seems that many things from their past are not even reported. For example, our current president. It would have been great to know his invlovment with Bill Ayers, a proud terrorists, or how the media wanted to play-down the fact that our president spent over 20 years in the Church of Rev. Wright.

I am sick and tired of the way that our President and the Liberals are spending money with no way to pay it back. The same Liberals that were all of over Bush over his spending are silent right now. Our President has spent more money than the last 30 combined, and yet it is still Bush's fault. Wow, I think Michael Savage was correct when he said that "Liberalism is a mental disease".

It is time for Conservative Americans to stand up and say, "That is enough, STOP SPENDING MONEY THAT WE DO NOT HAVE". We need to elect more true conservatives like Wright McLeod. In the November of 2010 the democrats took a butt-kicking when we took back the House. We also took back a large amount of Congrssional seats accross the country. I think that the country wanted to send a message to Washington. I also believe that not only will we retain the house in 2012, but we will take the Senate, and the white house. There are a large number of senate seats held by democrates than republicans.

I cannot wait until 2012 when we will take back our country.
