Cain leads Ga. GOP poll

ATLANTA -- Herman Cain is the preference of more Georgia Republican voters than any other GOP presidential candidate, according to a statewide poll released Friday.

Cain, the former pizza executive-turned WSB-AM talk-show host, led with 26 percent, followed by Rep. Michele Bachman, R-Minn., with 13. Former Georgia congressman Newt Gingrich came in third with 12 percent with former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin at 11 and ex-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 10. Neither woman has formally committed to running this year.

Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor, and Ron Paul, a Texas congressman, each snagged 1 percent. And 22 percent remain undecided.

The latest poll by InsiderAdvantage/WSB-TV was conducted June 2 among registered voters who say they are likely to vote in next year's Georgia Republican presidential preference primary. The poll surveyed 407 likely voters for a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent. Data have been weighted for age, race, gender and political affiliation.

Said InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery: "I'm not surprised with these results, given that Herman Cain has an evening talk show on WSB radio, which is one of the most influential radio stations in America. He is also appealing to GOP voters who are frustrated with the political status quo.

"Newt Gingrich likely has not done as well as he'd like because for the last few weeks he has gotten some bad media, and also because he has not been a consistent presence in Georgia for the last 10 years.

"My guess is that after the first major primaries, when some of the upstart names have dropped a bit in the polls, that Gingrich will fare well in Georgia," said Towery.

"Beyond Cain's excellent showing, the most interesting revelation in this poll is that Gingrich, Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin are about even with one another. This could make for quite a showdown among these major names by the time the Georgia primary arrives," he said.

@ Asitis... I agree with you.

@ Asitis... I agree with you. It seems that his only critics can't say specifically why they don't like him. Anyone who hears him speak and knows his ideas is a convert.
