SLED: Senate candidate faces no charges

  • Follow Elections

COLUMBIA - South Carolina's state police will not charge U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene over how the unemployed veteran got the money to pay his filing fee in the Democratic primary.

State Law Enforcement Division spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said Friday that agents also found Greene broke no laws by the way he presented his financial situation in a court case.

SLED was investigating how Greene paid the $10,440 U.S. Senate filing fee and was appointed a public defender on a felony obscenity charge.

Greene says he saved military pay for two years to pay the fee and is vindicated by the findings.

Greene won a shocking victory in last month's Democratic primary and will face GOP U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint.
