COLUMBIA — Gov. Nikki Haley said Tuesday her husband will be home before Christmas, after spending most of 2013 deployed in Afghanistan.

The Republican governor said she’s excited about the impending return of Capt. Michael Haley, who left in January for a month of training in Indiana before heading overseas. She expects to be notified of his arrival between 24 to 48 hours in advance.

“It’s like having a baby. You know it’s going to happen. You’re just waiting ‘til when,” she said. “We’re getting really close. It will definitely be before Christmas. We do know that.”

Haley’s South Carolina Army National Guard group has been working with Afghan farmers on practices to turn them away from growing poppies used to make opium. It was his first deployment overseas since joining the guard as an officer in 2006.

The governor has said she made her decision to run for a second term in June, after talking with her husband when he was home for his two-week leave.

Her office has said it’s unaware of any other governor’s spouse who is deployed with the uniformed military.

Lieutenant Governor will challenge

I'm reading where the Lieutenant Governor will challenge her in the next election. What a misguided decision that will result in a Democrat governor in the most conservative South Carolina.
