COLUMBIA — South Carolina’s $400 million Powerball jackpot winner has paid nearly $16 million in state taxes and $55 million to the federal government.

Education Lottery Executive Director Paul Harper Bethea told the lottery oversight committee Tuesday the payments were made Friday to the Department of Revenue and to the Internal Revenue Service.

The winner has chosen to remain anonymous. The jackpot was the fourth largest in the history of the game. The South Carolina man was the only winner of last month’s game.

Bethea says the excitement of the large prize boosted sales by about $2 million.

The winning ticket was bought at a Murphy Express just off Interstate 20 west of Columbia. The store got a $50,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Only in America

can a state say it is illegal unless they do it,
Then charge you for a ticket with 1 in 200 million odds,
collect millions selling the tickets,
then collect millions if and when someone does win.

It was about enriching the schools
but it looks like the State Rev dept. gets a tax cut also...

or is that $$$ also required to be spent the same way on schools?

Huh?

Headline says winnner owes $16M, article says $16M was paid. If the winner paid $16M and still owes $16M, the tax was $32M. So was the tax $32M or was the article poorly written?

It's not about the winners,

It's not about the winners, it's all about us "willingly" handing money over to the governments by playing the lottery. Every week they make money and then tax the winners. Seems like no one minds handing it over to them, otherwise, we'd all quit playing.

it's always about money

they just make you feel better saying it's about the kids.. and the lottery has been called a tax, specifically for the reasons you mentioned..

The lottery gives a lot of average people the chance to dream of hitting it big. As long as no one spends more than they can afford it's a chance of a lifetime.

We know the Feds will waste it but

maybe the State of SC will make the windfall into an education boost! How to boost, I don't know?

I would gladly pay state and

I would gladly pay state and federal taxes if I won the lottery. The way I see it the state or federal government would not get this money in the form of taxes if someone didn't win the money, the problem is how the tax money is spent. Georgia has made it to the point that those who really need the Hope Scholarship cannot qualify for it anymore. I do not know South Carolina's rules or how they pass out the money to education.

The government doesn't even have to play, they win every time.
