Augusta begins the first of a series of weekly work sessions today on the 2014 budget.

While City Administrator Fred Russell said most departmental requests were flat and excluded non-essential services, Commissioner Donnie Smith said he and other new faces on the commission would like a closer look.

“I think what has happened in the past was we looked at how much money they had last year, and went from there,” he said. “We should look at putting more money into essential services – like maintenance of rights of way, retention ponds, stormwater systems – and less money in nonessential services.”

The first work session, scheduled for 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today in the commission chamber, will focus on budget requests made by the sheriff’s office, fire department and 911.

Subsequent sessions have been scheduled for Sept. 19 and Sept. 26 will cover engineering, utilities, and environmental services, followed by the district attorney, public defender and Superior Court, respectively.

Suggestion

I suggest they start with basic math and gradually work into multiplication and division. At the end, teach checkbook balancing and the way you subtract from the balance. Remind them of the necessity to pay their bills. Recall the Commission meeting a few years ago when two commissioners had their cars repo'ed while they were in the meeting and had to walk home. Don't test or give any grades. No need to embarrass anyone.

I remember the car towing

Commisioners who cannot balance their own budget surely cannot manage the cities!

Is this a 12 step program for Commssioners?

If so how do we separate the addicts from the $$$$$ and the ability to just increase taxes to feed their habits?

Budget

From the story:

The first work session . . . will focus on budget requests made by the sheriff’s office, fire department and 911.

They can just take the requests and cut every line item by 5%.

Next week, when Fred (What, me worry?) Russell offers up his budget requests, cut every line item by 15%.

I wonder what Marion Williams will say about City Attorney Andrew MacKenzie’s budget request?
