A new 2 percent excise tax soon will be levied on energy used in manufacturing by Columbia County industries after commission approval Tuesday.

County commissioners unanimously approved the new tax, which replaces a 2 percent sales tax previously charged on energy used by factories.

Industries across Georgia received an exemption from those sales taxes by state legislation enacted last year that allows counties to recoup the lost revenue by imposing the excise tax.

After the new tax is added, Columbia County industries will pay 3 percent of energy used in county taxes, down from 7 percent in total sales tax prior to the new law.

Commissioners also approved fees for renting the county’s exhibition hall at the Gateway Center near Grovetown. The facility is expected to open June 10.

And we complain about

And we complain about taxation at the National level? Tax and spend is alive and well right here in Columbia County.

"Tax and spend"?

"Tax and spend"? This tax only replaces the local revenue the county lost when the state granted the across-the-board sales tax exemption. It isn't additional money. The industries still are getting 4 percent lower taxes even after this goes into effect. The county's budget next year is set to increase .07 percent in a county whose population grows about 3.5 percent per year, so I'm not sure I understand your comment.

It's not tax and spend but it is "No thanks. We don't want anymore manufacturers being lured to our county than we already have."

Gee, my costs are increasing too but my income is not. What did I do? Took a long hard look at where my spending is and made changes! What a novel concept for all governments!
