Columbia County School Board members and county commissioners on Tuesday separately approved plans for paving parking lots on the tract behind Lakeside High School.

Commissioners, during the Public Works Committee meeting Tuesday morning, agreed to spend $324,000 to pave their portion of the lot, while the school board Tuesday night OK’d spending just under $100,000 to pave their part.

“If we do it now, it’ll be a savings in the future,” said Columbia County Construction and Maintenance Division Director Matt Schlachter. “It’s a cost we’re going to have to experience now or later.”

Purchase and construction on the 70-acre park, a joint project of the school board and commission, is funded through sales taxes.Eventually, the park will include a new football stadium and other athletic facilities for Lakeside High School, and provide facilities for the county’s recreation programs. The site also will provide a second entrance to the Lakeside school complex.
