Columbia County commissioners approve office renovations

Job-hunters will find easier access and county commissioners will get more elbow room with a renovation project approved for a Columbia County government building.

Commissioners on Tuesday awarded the $535,030 bid to S.D. Clifton Construction Inc. of Evans to renovate Building B of the Evans Government Center.

“Hometown contractor, hometown business, hometown office,” District 3 Commissioner Charles Allen said after commissioners unanimously approved the bid.

Clifton recently completed renovations on Building C in the Government Center, turning the former Health Department clinic into combined offices for the county’s Development Authority, Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The building’s exterior won’t change, but the inside will be gutted, Construction and Maintenance Division Director Matt Schlachter said.

“This is a complete renovation,” he said. “That building is 20 years old.”

The Human Relations department will move downstairs, taking over the first floor for easier public access and to provide more room for offices and records, Schlachter said.

Upstairs, the four district commissioners for the first time will each get an office, and they’ll also get a larger conference room.

The project could begin “within a month,” Schlachter said, but it might take a while because the building will be occupied.

Funding for the renovations comes from the county’s sales tax.
