A Grovetown councilwoman who incited a contentious debate at Monday’s meeting resigned Thursday.

Jennifer Jones submitted her resignation in an e-mail to Mayor George James and City Manager Shirley Beasley.

Her resignation is effective immediately. In her e-mail, Jones stated that the job took too much time away from her family.

“After much consideration and consulting with my family, we have decided I should put my family first,” according to the e-mail.

A message to Jones wasn’t immediately returned.

During routine appointments at Monday’s meeting, Jones made a motion to replace City Clerk Vicky Capetillo. Other council members didn’t initially agree. After an executive session, all the proposed appointees, including Capetillo, were approved with Jones as the only dissenting vote.

Jones was appointed in January 2011 to fill the
unexpired term of one of two resigning council members. She was elected to a four-year term in November 2011.

Beasley said that because more than a year remains in Jones’ term, a special election must be held.

James said city leaders are consulting with the Board of Elections to nail down a special election date. The earliest possible dates are March 19 and June 18.

“The earliest to me is the best,” he said. “Get it done, get all this behind us and let’s go on down the road.”

Playin' gov'met. LOL

Wasted duplication of services, representation, et al. The little kingdom of Grovetown. Harlem, too. Is it worth it taxpayers? To let petty people play at managing YOUR lives. We have clowns in Evans-towne who can do this for the whole county. One circus per county is enough. Get "outside the "box" for once.
