Regent and former state legislator Larry Walker, the chairman, would not identify the candidates by name, but did say Monday all are currently in academia — apparently meaning that rumored candidates like former Gov. Sonny Perdue aren’t in the mix any more, if they ever were.
“All have excellent credentials and have experience at large, public institutions,” according to Walker’s announcement.
Several have had experience at large land-grant universities like UGA; five are current college presidents; three are provosts; and one is dean of a large school in a public university, according to the announcement.
The pool is slightly reduced from the 12-candidate group Walker announced in October, also without naming names. At that time, a professional search firm began calling up references and checking backgrounds, while at the same time seeking more candidates.
Committee members will interview the nine next month.
The committee is looking to name a successor by about March for current UGA President Michael Adams, who will step down June 30 after 16 years.
