ATHENS, Ga. -- A search committee for a new University of Georgia president has cut the field of candidates to nine, the committee’s chairman says.

Regent and former state legislator Larry Walker, the chairman, would not identify the candidates by name, but did say Monday all are currently in academia — apparently meaning that rumored candidates like former Gov. Sonny Perdue aren’t in the mix any more, if they ever were.

“All have excellent credentials and have experience at large, public institutions,” according to Walker’s announcement.

Several have had experience at large land-grant universities like UGA; five are current college presidents; three are provosts; and one is dean of a large school in a public university, according to the announcement.

The pool is slightly reduced from the 12-candidate group Walker announced in October, also without naming names. At that time, a professional search firm began calling up references and checking backgrounds, while at the same time seeking more candidates.

Committee members will interview the nine next month.

The committee is looking to name a successor by about March for current UGA President Michael Adams, who will step down June 30 after 16 years.

Please let it be

our local GRU president and sneak in charge.

Instead of working with Save the A,

We should have been working with Rid an A.

As much as I want a certain

As much as I want a certain local university president to move on to "greener pastures," I certainly hope he's not put in charge of UGA.

University of Egypt or Kuwait

Would be a better place for the "A". Far far far away!

Dishonest Not To Release Names

There's something dishonest about UGA not releasing the names of those who have applied and are being considered. This is not a football coaching position. If you apply for another job with another university, your name should be released. In addition we will have no idea who the competition was. If candidate X is selected over other candidates we don't know, that doesn't say much.
