Loved, hated or ignored, Augusta government touches nearly all the consolidated city-county’s 200,590 residents in some way.

Those seeking to tweak or otherwise better understand the government’s involvement in their lives or businesses are invited to a City of Augusta Government Open House, set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Augusta Municipal Building, 530 Greene St.

Tax Commissioner Steven Kendrick said the event grew out of his annual tax relief conferences, which have proved popular. At the request of city Administrator Fred Russell, Kendrick said he invited other departments to participate.

“If we were pulling back the curtain, why not do it with everybody else?” Kendrick said.

Among those participating Saturday are the tax commissioner’s office, tax assessor, fire department, sheriff’s office, board of elections, codes enforcement, engineering, utilities, recreation and facilities, animal services, procurement and environmental services. Also attending are several Augusta commissioners, he said.

“There are so many departments that have called to be involved,” Kendrick said. “They want to be able to allow citizens to ask them questions as well.”

In past years the tax relief conferences have shown taxpayers how to save hundreds of dollars by applying for exemptions they might have overlooked, and that same information will be available Saturday, he said.

Those departments with offices on the municipal building’s first floor will be open Saturday. Others with offices on upper floors or in other buildings will present their information in booths or on tables on the first and second floors, he said.

"Procurement" and "open" in

"Procurement" and "open" in the same sentence?

Was that meant to be a joke?

Will Procurement have its public records open to the public?

Kendrick's department lost

Kendrick's department lost $25,000 out of the safe and he is leading this? Somehow it makes perfect sense with this totally dysfunctional government and officials.

Will the safe be open?

Is the building up to "ARC Building Codes"? All of the 205K citizens are touched in some way. LOL 40% are touched each day in their wallet area. 100% have their brains touched each and everyday with "ARC smoke". Some are even touched in a "loving way".
