Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength has thrown his support behind Republican candidate Freddie Sanders in the race to succeed him.

Strength, who backed sheriff’s Capt. Scott Peebles in the Democratic runoff, announced his endorsement by news release Monday afternoon.

“Without hesitation or second thoughts, I will endorse and support my close friend Freddie Sanders for Richmond County Sheriff in the November General Election,” Strength said in the release.

Sanders will face school public safety Lt. Richard Roundtree, who defeated Peebles in last week’s runoff.

“Voting for and electing a Sheriff should not be about Democrat or Republican,” Strength, who has run as a Democrat in each of his elections, said in his statement. “It should be about the most qualified person.”

Roundtree issued a statement of his own Monday afternoon, acknowledging the sheriff’s position.

“I certainly understand and respect the sheriff’s decision to support his friend,” he said. “Endorsements are fine but I have always said this is the people’s campaign. The response of the people has been tremendous.

“I respectfully disagree with the sheriff about his statement concerning political parties but I reach out my hand and ask every person for their support. Only by working together can we bring the community together, heal any wounds and work towards a brighter future.”

Heck, Austin was saying the whole legal matter of whether Roundtree was eligible to run was being investigated. That's where I thought it was going. Come to find out it's nothing but this crazy woman wanting a car for 4 votes she found for Roundtree.

Me Too

That's what I thought River. This vote buying has no impact on the candidacy of Roundtree. Why don't you and Fishman go fishing on the river, kill some suds and make nice. I understand the sting he feels, and no doubt nerves are raw.

Old Man River

will take a mason jar full of shine, some catawba worms and cruise down to deepstep when the water is rising. Fishman will be standing at the helm, singing on the way back to the ramp. Now the debate about who cleans them Crappie and Brims, that's another argument.

Ya know River, I never thought about it but a fish can't live out of water.

Folks, I ain't got a darned thing against River, he is entitled to his opinion just like anyone else on here or life for that matter.

@ bonz

Its funny you think this is all looking out for the Good Ol Boys....That Sheriff Strength is only endorsing his buddies, but your blind to the fact that both Peebles and Sanders are better qualified for the position...it just happens to be that those gentlemen are his friends as well. All this people are against Tree because he's not one of the Good Ol Boys or because he is Black is silly and at times ignorant...to bad to many people cant see the facts.
