Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength has thrown his support behind Republican candidate Freddie Sanders in the race to succeed him.

Strength, who backed sheriff’s Capt. Scott Peebles in the Democratic runoff, announced his endorsement by news release Monday afternoon.

“Without hesitation or second thoughts, I will endorse and support my close friend Freddie Sanders for Richmond County Sheriff in the November General Election,” Strength said in the release.

Sanders will face school public safety Lt. Richard Roundtree, who defeated Peebles in last week’s runoff.

“Voting for and electing a Sheriff should not be about Democrat or Republican,” Strength, who has run as a Democrat in each of his elections, said in his statement. “It should be about the most qualified person.”

Roundtree issued a statement of his own Monday afternoon, acknowledging the sheriff’s position.

“I certainly understand and respect the sheriff’s decision to support his friend,” he said. “Endorsements are fine but I have always said this is the people’s campaign. The response of the people has been tremendous.

“I respectfully disagree with the sheriff about his statement concerning political parties but I reach out my hand and ask every person for their support. Only by working together can we bring the community together, heal any wounds and work towards a brighter future.”

You know what River

I love Richmond county A LOT......I see what has happened to the south side of Augusta everytime I visit.....just saying it has been neglected just doesn't get it.....their tax dollars are spent...but I don't see it in my ole areas....one of the reasons I have been vocal is because I know others feel as I do.....it isn't just the job of Sheriff that can make a difference .....knowing the politics --knowing the money flow--knowing the law--knowing the PEOPLE in charge ---all of that matters.....able to work with the right folks on RCSO----we don't have time for grudges....we don't have money to waste.....we don't have time to argue race ........if I didn't think Freddie was the right man at this time....believe me ....I wouldn't waste my time on here...
HE IS RIGHT---HE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE..

Trust

This election has now boiled down to trust. We have comments from both sides about how their candidate is better than the other.
The Roundtree supporters say that he can change the SD in a positive way by getting out in the community instead of sitting behind a desk. They also say it is time for a new kind of Sheriff. I have also heard that a certain segment of the community has been unduly harassed for no reason. They want to get their man elected because they think the change will benefit them. I say that they are delusional.
The Sanders supporters say that their man is the best because of his integrity. They say that he has long standing ties with the community that will help him lead us into the future. They say that he has proven that he can lead by previously being the police chief.
I say that the only thing that matters now is whether you can trust either man to live up to his word. I don't know enough about Freddie Sanders to cite all his qualifications. And frankly, I don't know enough about Richard Roundtree to cite all his qualifications.
All I can go by is previous actions and track record.
I simply don't trust Roundtree to do what is best for RC. He broke the public trust and it is all a matter of public record.

I sent a personal message to Brad Owens and asked him just what Roundtree has done to earn back his trust. He has not answered me.

Seenit, you are the only commenter I have seen to post positive comments. All others are simply trying to make their guy look good at the expense of others.

I ask the community "Who do you trust and on what basis are you going by"?

I know for a fact Sanders

I know for a fact Sanders will sweep stuff under the rug when it comes to family and there are clouds over Roundtree as well so this should be interesting!

Quick, Jump on the Bandwagon

Interesting that some former Peebles supporters now say they will support Roundtree because of his platform for community policing. When Peebles was interviewed he was so positive for Roundtree the reporter later said it was an endorsement. So Strength is endorsing Sanders and Peebles is not?

No question about it. I'm

No question about it. I'm voting for Sanders. Although, I will admit, that Roundtree is a perfect fit for our local government of the "City of Augusta". Poor judgement, questionalbe ethics, a tainted past, least qualified....yep, he will fit right in with the rest of our "leadership" and direction we are going.

Let's face it folks. The demographics say that Roundtree will be the next sheriff. That's unfortunate. But it is a fact. It only goes downhill from here. You can talk all you want about qualifications, ethics, and who's the best man for the job. But don't kid yourself. This election is all about skin color. I know there are some good, qualified people in the black community. I just wish some of them would run for office.

My question to the black community: If Roundtree was a white guy with the same questionable past, work history, and ethics and Freddie Sanders was a black guy, who would you vote for?

Contridictions

Entrenchment is one thing but this is how petrified the “progress” of this area is…“Sanders and Strength's partnership dates back more than 40 years.”…"I worked for him when he was police chief of the county police department," Strength said.” “About Freddie --- Freddie spent sixteen years with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department (1969-1985).” Strength is retiring and the man that supervised him over 27 years ago is trying to replace him. Freddie should be mentoring not sheriffen. That’s why there are no strong or ready candidates for sheriff (if certain opinions are true).

There is a sense of arrogance and self-righteousness on here resulting from an endowment of “superiority”. Read the “lofty” posts...the he’s better than him, our county is better than your kind of posts. It’s as if these fine gentlemen are the very inspiration for the bible and religion itself. They are human and most likely not as perfect as we would like them to be. Yes they have “stellar” reputations but we must be honest and admit that this is in the eye and mind of the beholder. If we were really dealing with reality, lets evaluate the statistical data historically regarding unemployment rates, look at southern heritage and social practices for what they authentically are, understand the lack of value in gentrification within and flight (with income) out of Richmond County.

When you have status quo there are no problems with ethics, etc. because within the circle you have everything that outsiders have to steal. The do as I say not as I doism applies here. These gentlemen with their southern charm and wit just smile and all is in place as it should be. The smile is quicker than the eye…one admired hand washes the other…Now we want this fine upstanding gentleman (I admit) who was the chief of police over 27 years ago to lead us where?

Now let’s take a look at contridictions…

Would we let Roundtree forget this and give him a job?

Strength said he discussed the incident with Probus, and Columbia County and had no concerns. Probus will start at the training center, like all new deputies on the Richmond County force.

If he did this….

Our neighbor and their former governor Mark Sanford responsible for an entire state and abandoned the state to chase what?

Sanford met in Atlanta after returning from South America
Update: Sanford admits affair

Sanford admitted later Wednesday that his secret trip to Argentina over Father's Day weekend was to visit a woman he is having an affair with. Sanford's whereabouts had been unknown since Thursday, and the mystery surrounding his absence fueled speculation about where he had been and who's in charge in his absence. His emergence Wednesday ended the mystery. Media reports said a SLED SUV the governor drove that night was spotted in the airport's parking lot.

The governor said he cut his trip short after his chief of staff, Scott English, told him his trip was gaining a lot of media attention and he needed to come back.

When asked why his staff said he was on the Appalachian Trail, Sanford replied, "I don't know."

A shift vs another country, another woman, and abandonment of an entire state responsibility….

He was suspended for 5 days after his superiors wrote a letter to the review board, saying that Roundtree had sex with 3 female officers on his shift. His superiors wrote that those sexual encounters happened at the Econo Lodge hotel, where one of the rooms used to be a Richmond County substation. They wrote that the female officers admitted to having sex with Roundtree. His superior wrote, "Officer Roundtree isn't a single person. He is married, but has all the women on this shift mad at each other at this time. We would appreciate officer Roundtree to be assigned elsewhere so our shift can get back to normal."

Jack - What the Heck

That is about the longest mishmash of nothing I have seen in a long time.
Dichotomy- If a fact is stated and the fact reflects negatively on a candidate, it is not negative. It is a fact.
As I posted earlier, we must examine qualifications, moral character, and integrity when selecting a Sheriff. Previous posters have cited Sanders qualifications in detail. Previous posters (even Jack at the end of his thesis) have cited documented incidents of integrity and character breaches from Roundtree. No one has mentioned his posts as GratefulMother to defend himself.

In my assessment, the choice is clear. Sanders is the man for the job.

Another word about trust

The supporters that elected Obama to office claimed that they trusted him to lead us to prosperity. Ha was "right " for the job, they said.

Where is this prosperity at? Where is the good that he has done?
He has endowed us with many negatives that I will not mention, but to quote my favorite president....

"Are you better off today than you were four years ago"?

We need to think about the good for all of us and not just a certain segment.

Ronnie Roundtree

Ronnie Roundtree might be just what Augusta need. I was very suprise how people here want you to vote party line when it benefit them. I now see how this town is so divided, a man won by the vote of the people and the color of his skin wasn't right now you want to divide party line. Roundtree have made mistake of his pass, but he learn and grew from those mistake. When others have made the same mistake it have been kept under the rug.
I went to the candidates' websites...Sanders' site didn't reveals nothing about how he was going to bring Richmond County together. At Roundtree's outlines his mission point by point.
How on this comment about the "white limo accompanying the announcement of his candidacy", have nothing to do with it. Really one of his supporters decided to give that to him which was good. I feel it gave Roundtree a time to reflect over all the things that had happen but had brought him to where he is at this point. People really need to stop "Hating" on one another.
I feel Strength's endorsement will probably do more to benefit Roundtree than it will Sanders. I have never seen a Sheriff who is in his office as much as Strength. Relocation here from Jacksonville, NC were Sheriff Ed Brown is seen around town. Making a strong inpack in the city he loves and have call home. I feel that Roundtree will bring that same kind of love and pride to Richmond County. I hope he will have a open door to the people, because he will be there because of the people.
I don't want anyone to say to me that you need to vote down party line when the present Sheriff didn't, because of the color of someone skin and the fact that he didn't bow down to him when he worked under him. Strength just handed Roundtree a freebie by jumping across party lines.
I feel

Ronnie Roundtree?

Just who is this Ronnie Roundtree?

And just because a person says they are going to do something does not mean that he will follow through.

If you think that the Walker family has nothing to do with "Richard" as far as grooming, then you are delusional, as well.

Give me a black candidate without all the baggage and I will endorse him.
Skin color has nothing to do with it for me.

Most times I simply read the

Most times I simply read the different comments on various boards without commenting and usually find it interesting to see people's different views and opinions on the same topic. I'm not sure who I'm voting for come November because I too feel party affiliation should not be a deciding factor in the sheriff's race and unfortunately, I don't have the luxury like most Richmond Co. citizens, of only knowing what I read on each candidate's obviously biased website.

My husband was a police officer for over 12 years in Richmond Co. and decided to get out because of it's corrupt practices and non-progressive attitudes. Since this race began, he's shared so much "dirt" on Strength, Peebles, Sanders, and Roundtree until I have no idea who the "right" man is for the job. Each hold pros and cons in their own right but it literally just hit me as I was reading the comments here...

I think we can all agree that the crime rate in Augusta, specifically the Southside of Augusta has increasingly gotten worse, not better over the years. During much of this time, Strength was at the helm. If Peebles and Sanders will merely be a continuation of what Strength has done, what will get better? For that matter, will it get better under Roundtree? His dirt is out for all to see but do I think he's the right man to clean this city up? I don't know. Wish I did. All I can say is I hope whoever wins in November is a praying man because he's going to need all the help he can get to turn this city around.

I watched Strength in an
Unpublished

I watched Strength in an interview yesterday, and he said Freddie Sanders doesn't bring all the baggage with him that Roundtree does. He also said that the Sheriff's position is mainly an Administrative position which Sanders is more qualified for. Strength just felt that at this time Roundtree doesn't have enough experience yet to be Sheriff, he also said it's not about political parties it's about who can do the job right!

With that being said I would have to agree. Furthermore, just because Strength supports Freddie Sanders now doesn't make him a racist, and just because I choose to support Sanders as well because I feel he is better qualified for the job doesn't make me a racist either.

Some people in this town need to grow up, get an education, and get a clue about life.

Good Day!

Apparently, official

Apparently, official complaints have been waged against Roundtree's election and an official investigation by the state is underway. The complaints say he was not eligible to run, plus his campaign was making promises for votes. I just hope they get into the case of the Fried Chicken Votes, too, if we are going too. Kick um both out. Make Silas the nominee. Wouldn't that be something?

So what I'm hearing is Rountree supporters promised people things and so on if they got others to vote. This was done pretty openly out in the neighborhoods.
