Some illegal immigrants can get Georgia driver's licenses

ATLANTA — Illegal immigrants who are granted permission to stay in the country under an Obama administration policy that was announced in June will be eligible for drivers’ licenses in Georgia, the state’s attorney general wrote in a letter to the governor.

“While I do not agree with the actions of the President in issuing the directive, it has been implemented by the Department of Homeland Security, USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services), and state law recognizes the approval of deferred action status as a basis for issuing a temporary driver’s license,” Attorney General Sam Olens, a Republican, wrote in a letter obtained Thursday by The Associated Press.

Olens said illegal immigrants with the special status would not, however, be eligible for a state identification card. He says such cards are considered public benefits which are not available to illegal immigrants.

Under the policy – which was announced in June and took effect last week – eligible immigrants must have arrived in the U.S. before their 16th birthday, are 30 or younger, have lived here at least five years, and are in school or graduated or served in the military.

They also must not have a criminal record or otherwise pose a safety threat. They can apply to stay in the country and be granted a work permit for two years, but they would not be granted citizenship.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed an executive order Aug. 15, the day the policy took effect, telling state agencies not to give driver’s licenses or other benefits to illegal immigrants who obtain work authorizations under the deferred status.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said this month that each state could determine whether to issue drivers’ licenses or extend benefits such as in-state tuition to immigrants who are granted deferred status.

A Georgia Department of Driver Services spokeswoman said last week that Georgia law considers those with deferred action status eligible for drivers’ licenses and that the agency would issue them unless it got other instructions. Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal last week asked Olens for guidance on the matter.

Federal immigration authorities can also grant deferred action status to other illegal immigrants at their discretion.

Vote

I would suspect that some of them will try to use their new driving licenses to register to vote. Those "get out the vote drives" are notorious about registering anyone who breathes, whether they are a citizen or not.

I just hope that they have to provide the same documentation (official birth certificate, SSN, and 2 other proof of address) that I did last week, then go for it.

Why would they use their new driver license to register to vote when you do not even have to show a drivers license to vote???

And the rest of you GA fools

And the rest of you GA fools will have to bring your birth certificates, two picture IDs, and a couple of utility bills to get your already valid driver licenses renewed. If you are an illegal alien, all you need to show is some bogus Obama stamped piece of paper. How stupid are we folks? Let's just make it harder for the real American citizens to get a license. They will probably create an express line at the DMV for illegals who only have to show their Obama Homeland Security PASS while the rest of us get told to come back again because we only brought one utility bill or something.

Is it just me or have our federal and state governments turned against their own citizens? Is it time yet?

Citizens rights are no longer available
Unpublished

We are officially a third world country. Praise be to OB. Praise be to OB. Now not only will they have a bogus license they can also continue to "have no proof of insurance". Of course law abiding American citizens will have to provide documentation out the wazoo along with increased insurance premiums for those who do not need to carry liability insurance. As the suedo elite head of the DNC. declares. "the Republicans are trying to make being a illegal alien a crime". If you are breaking the law every minute of the day, why not violate state auto insurance laws that have never been enforced. No proof of insurance, no license , no tag and a fine.

I know you asked Little Lamb, but:

Every time my husband and I have ever voted, we both have to show our driver's licence. So, I am not sure what you are talking about.

I was required to show my GA driver's license when I voted on July 31 and August 21 and in every election I have ever participated in.

These cretins remain illegal aliens

Comrade O's unlawful decree appears to say these invaders can't be deported for 2 years. That's it. How does this obligate a state to issue these parasites any type of breeder doc? These clowns remain illegally in the country despite O's BS. Issue no documents and deny employment to these illegals. Comrade O's decree violates the constitution.

"Is it just me....

....or have our federal and state governments turned against their own citizens?"

It is NOT just you. But, you are among the relative few who are wise enough to see what's happening.

Most government leaders have learned, through experience, that they can lie to us, take half our earnings, live like royalty, enrich themselves and their friends, keep the majority of us undereducated, over indoctrinated, untrained, unemployable, lacking in self confidence, and addicted to drugs, or alcohol, or government freebies, or all of the above. Occasionally, they throw some of us a bone in the form of some kind of tax break, but often they keep us in line with promises of reform which NEVER come to fruition.

There are only two ways I can think of to fix the system. One is at the ballot box. It's our last, best hope, but since so many are uneducated and addicted to government freebies it is somewhat unlikely. The next election will tell the tale.

If we, as a people, don't vote the current Administration out of office, I believe anarchy will result. In fact, I think it's quite likely anarchy will follow the election no matter who is elected. As a matter of further speculation on my part, I think anarchy is likely before the election depending on how the polls appear as the election nears.

Have a nice weekend.

I voted using a voter registration card issued in 1974. No picture, slightly out of date weight. True, most people use their driver's license.

We Need To Move Toward Amnesty

because, whether we like it or not, that is what will ultimately happen - no matter how the politicians spin it.

Romney is a good, pro business moderate. He's taken liberal/moderate positions in the past and is now incorporating some hard core conservative positions into his overall game. This American likes it.

Romney is pro oil and this American sees energy exploration and development, and ultimately, energy independence, as a most paramount issue.

Those of us in the hardcore PRO LIFE camp can stand to move toward the center on some issues, save our energy, and rally our side to fight against the killers of innocent, unborn children.

Conservative Baby Boomers - you're a large, wealthy and politically active/engaged demographic. We younger Pro Lifers, who may be more moderate/left on other social issues know and respect the things that you have done that make this country still the greatest on earth.

Many of us in Generation X have grown up - we're done being slackers. We are done with apathy and cynicism. Many of us are good center right moderates who believe in a brighter future for America.

When you are gone, it will be us who leads this country. Help us while you are still here.

There's a little bit of a generation gap. We need to bridge that gap.

We need you. You need us. Let's do this.

I always love your posts.

This election will truly tell the tale -do we stand for a country where gov provides for every need? Or do we truly stand for the rights of the individual to be free and to pursue happiness?

Let's take care of those who really need it, but absolutely, let's throw the able bodied off the freebie rolls. Those on the left may see such action as draconian, but that's irrelevant - if you push people till they have their backs against the wall, they will rise up and fight. Some will fight the wrong fight and end up in prison. The majority, after a time, will spread their wings and fly and fight the good fight.

There ain't a leftist out there that can tell me one thing about poverty. I spent my childhood and coming-of-age years in some of the hardest neighborhoods in the this country. I know the asphalt jungles very well.

And i can tell you...people who live in abject poverty, in most cases, choose to live that way. Only these days, "poverty" is a pretty good living.

This generational welfare living has to stop.

This is generally attributed

This is generally attributed to an article published in the Czech Republic newspaper Prager Zeitung, April 2011. Regardless of the source, it is still the truth:

" The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president".

Good Question

Augusta Resident asked:

Anyway, how can anyone tell if they have been here 5 years and came here before they were 16?

Exactly. All the alien has to do is certify, i.e., attest, that he/she was brought to the U.S. before age of 16 and has been here continuously for at least 5 years. There is no proof required, and no checking required. This shows the poverty of the Obama amnesty program.

GA license

I had to show, birth certificate, proof of address and another form of ID to get my license, yet we are going to make it easier for illegals to get theirs. Just another instance of how truly screwed up our government truly is. I hope they are better at insuring their vehicles here than they are in California.....three of our relatives in Cali have had traffic accidents involving illegals and none of them had any insurance on their vehicles.

The American People had a

The American People had a choice:

Obama and Biden

McCain and that dumb cluck Sarah Palin.

And that, folks, is why we have Obama. We weren't fools at all; the American people knew that Palin didn't have the qualifications to do the job.

And that's one election that they got right.

I submit that a Czechslovakian newspaper, Prager Zeitung, doesn't realize just how incredibly stupid Palin was. They think Obama's bad, it would've been 10 times worse with that airhead as VP, and God forbid, maybe even President.

Sarah Palin

had a bigger influence on the 2010 mids, didn't she? I think that she galvanized the Tea Party in her own way.

In fact, I'd say that even though she is not presently on the radar all that much, if Romney wins...maybe some of what she did brought it around?

I'm not looking at it from the emotional angle, slinging the vitriol around. Just being a bit objective.

What do you think?

You are right on, my friend.

Palin had a huge influence on the vote in 2008 and, in spite of the left's unprecedented campaign of hate and character assassination, she prevented McCain from losing by a huge margin.

Palin was elected to the city council of her hometown, then elected mayor. Next she was appointed as Chairman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, responsible for overseeing the state's oil and gas fields for safety and efficiency. Next she was elected Governor, becoming the youngest person ever elected to that post. She was selected by McCain to be his Vice Presidential running mate and drew huge, enthusiastic crowds wherever she spoke (and still does). Sarah Palin has fished commercially for salmon, alongside her husband, she's a life member of the NRA, and she's shot, killed, and skinned a moose. Through all of this she is the mother of five children and a stone cold knock-out.

I'd put her resume up against 99.99999 percent of these folks who've bought into the liberal media's character assassination rhetoric about how "stoopid" she is.

I think what REALLY gets some of them is that while doing all of this she made a conscious effort to carry and give birth to a baby which she KNEW was defective. A huge percentage of the women who hate her do so because they know, deep in their hearts, that under the same circumstances they would have aborted that child, the one who is now called "Trig Palin." She knew Trig would be born defective, but told nobody about it, except her husband.

After Trig was born, she issued this statement "Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed."

Sarah Palin is one of my heroes, in spite of what the Katie Courics of the world have to say about her.
