Virginia college objects to Augusta university name

Regent University opposes 'Regents' name

ATLANTA — One of the possible names for the merged Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities is drawing objections from a Virginia school.

Officials from Regent University wrote to the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents on Saturday requesting a different name from Georgia Regents University, which was recommended by a committee.

“We are concerned that there could be some confusion and dilute our brand,” Regent University President Carlos Campo said Monday.

Regent University enrolls 60 percent of its students online, many from Georgia.

The proposed name makes the Augusta institution sound as though it’s a branch of the 6,000-student Virginia school, Campo said.

He said Monday morning that he is trying to reach his Georgia counterparts by phone to discuss the matter in a friendly way so that the e-mail from his attorney isn’t the only communication.

Regent University, founded in 1978 by the Rev. Pat Robertson as CBN University, changed its name in 1990 and holds a trademark to the name. Campo said that he doesn’t want a court fight but that his attorney felt confident the school using the name longer would prevail.

When the Virginia school changed its name, it sought permission from the 600-student Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, which raised no objection because the schools were in different countries.

Georgia officials might also want to avoid confusion because a state school has a different mission from a faith-based university. The Canadian school is also faith-based.

Campo cited the reaction from readers of The Augusta Chronicle who want the name of their city in the school’s new name. He suggested that was another reason for selecting one of the other proposed names forwarded to the board – Georgia Arts & Sciences University or the University of Augusta.

There is Hope

Maybe this can be what we need to get the silly name stopped. Keep your fingers crossed. Tomorrow is the big day. Find some UGA officials and get them to say the name is to close to UGA. We HAVE to stop this thing.

I would still like to know

I would still like to know what local movers and shakers were behind the merger as ol Walter Jones mentioned in an article months back.

Get Statements From Bob Young and Larry Sconyers

Let's get forceful statements from Bob Young and Larry Sconyers saying how much the proposed names anger the CSRA. Deke is on the way to the beach again. Controversy is here and it's uncomfortable for him like his Speedos are too tight.

Vanity

The vanity of a Board of Regents trustee is a powerful thing, indeed. It will be an uphill struggle to prevent Georgia Regents going forward.

This is Augusta....

and the name of this merger should reflect such. This school is a reflection of the Augusta GA area and the name should be as well. What about Augusta State & Medical University OR Augusta State & Medical College?

Price tag?

After the dust settles and the lawyers, sign makers, stationary folks, marketing gurus, national name taste-testers, Internet and computer workers, six-figure senior administrators, and more have all been paid...

What will the final price tag be for the name change?

And how much - if any - will be left for actually educating our kids?

As I said previously, this

As I said previously, this was just a ruse to throw everyone into a state of agitation. We all know it is going to be called the 'Azziz School of Disease".( I would like to take credit for coming up with that name, but I have to give credit to one of our local radio personalities.)

Close Name

I thought the committee that was in charge of this name change idea had done their research on same/similar names. Why would a name be recommended that would obviously clash with another university's name?

I agree with Insider Information ... the "real new name" will appear tomorrow.

name?

I read that Dr. Azziz didn't want "Augusta" in the name because it could be confused with Augusta, Maine and similar locations. He's not worried about confusing us with the school in Virginia? You know, we didn't have all of this confusion until he arrived. Medical College of Georgia was good enough for years...Augusta State University was a fine name as well...now this person breezes in and makes huge changes, not that change can't be helpful, but at what expense? Someone needs to step in and stop all of this foolishness.

Just when you thought this
Unpublished

Just when you thought this fiasco couldn't get any worse.......now a potential lawsuit!

To top it all, the old "Georgia Health Sciences University" banners are still festooning MCG, ostentatiously announcing a previous name change which was actually quite recent but which seems like a very long time ago, now.

Can you say "change fatigue"?? Most of the employees at MCG sure can.

As a graudate of The Medical

As a graudate of The Medical College of Georgia, I personally think Georgia Regents University is a ridiculous name and not at all relevant to the purposes of either school. I did however like Georgia Arts and Sciences University. It at least covers the focus of both former schools and so easy to say either in full or by acronym GASU. I would add that perhaps Georgia Arts and Medical Sciences University would be even more appropriate, but a bit wordy

Wow. Amazing how uninformed some are
Unpublished

To those of you who reference Obama in this consolidation issue, Obama has nothing to do with this. The Consolidation was proposed by the chancellor of the Board of Regents and sanctioned by our governor and the state legislature. This is a Georgia initiative put in motion by the Georgia state government.

To those of you who want some reference to the medical school in the name of the New U, look around the country. Name one school that calls itself "______ University and Medical School." There isn't a single major university in the entire country that does that. It isn't UCLA and Medical School. It's UCLA and, when their medical school is discussed, it is referred to as UCLA Medical School. The same applies to Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Brown, and all state universities. With any lucky the New U will become "University of Augusta" and the med school will be referred to as "University of Augusta Medical School."

Forbidden Words

Itsallnew11 asked:

What about Augusta State & Medical University OR Augusta State & Medical College?

Sorry, Itsallnew, but Dr. Azziz, the merged university's president, dictated a non-negotiable condition that the merged university's name not include the words medicine, medical, nor health.

Note that Harvard, Stanford, Emory, etc. all have medical schools, but the word medical does not appear in the formal name of the university.
