ATLANTAThe Senate voted 47-0 Thursday to transfer to the University System of Georgia the 16 acres on Reynolds Street in Augusta that was to be the home of the defunct Georgia Golf Hall of Fame.

Georgia Health Sciences University had requested the property for use as a campus after its merger with Augusta State University. Officials from the combined schools have said no specific uses have been determined.

Some local leaders have called for part of it to house a stadium for the Augusta GreenJackets, but the University System agreed not to use the land for any commercial activities until the bonds sold to buy the property originally are paid off in three years.

The House passed the measure at 11:30 p.m., 30 minutes before the General Assembly adjourned.

The resolution awaits the governor's signature.

I wonder what the three year

I wonder what the three year delay before commercial activities can occur means? They could start building school related buildings immediately? That also means even if Azziz wanted to allow a stadium, it wouldn't be allowed for three years.

In the first place, RM, the

In the first place, RM, the school does not have a single clue what it wants to do with the land, much less have any funds to do something. In the second place, Azziz has much more to worry about in the short term, which is attending to the myriad of details of merging two schools.

Azziz coveted the land merely because it was there and desirable.

As far as the ballpark, I'm sure that Merged University (MU) could build a ballpark immediately as long as it was non-commercial, i.e., it is to be used for games for the Jaguars. It could even be rented out to high school tournaments or college games. But it would be forbidden for a pro team to play on it for profit.

Yep, as I said, a pro stadium

Yep, as I said, a pro stadium CAN'T be built there for at least 3 years. There were previous reports of what Azizz possibly wanted there, although I suppose none of it was firm. As far as MU not having money, they can always get money from the state or the FOUNDATION.

Sounds like they are trying

Sounds like they are trying to do like Vandy does in Nashville. Vandy is the landlord and owner of 80% of the space in downtown Nashville. And what the 3 year deal is that they cant profit from the land until all the debts/bonds are paid. Here in Nashville Vandy owns the land and then leases it to business/restaurants whoever and when they actually need to expand they will give the tenants a 1 year notice and then start the process of expansion. Vandy did it to one of the biggest malls, 100 Oaks, in the nashville area, they turned it in to a doctors office sans the first floor, in which they left for commericial space

Little Lamb hit the nail on

Little Lamb hit the nail on the head with her statement: Azziz coveted.... That is simply all there is to him. He covets real estate and power. I think he is pretty shallow and it is time the taxpayer stopped putting money in his account. Won't he be a big man in Augusta when he becomes the president of Axxix University!!!! LOL!!!

Significant difference

Significant difference between Vanderbilt and MU — Vandy is private, MU is state government.

What's unreasonable about

What's unreasonable about schools acquiring land for expansion? They are state schools, it's state land.

Nope. The purchase contracts the former landowners signed contained no right of first refusal clause.

There is nothing wrong with

There is nothing wrong with MU expanding, RM. And with MU being spread out all over town, this parcel fits the model. But the taxpayers who paid for the land (and are still paying and paying) thought they were getting a Hall of Fame they could visit. It's the old bait & switch game.

After the city buys Hyde Park

After the city buys Hyde Park and relocates the residents, perhaps the city could donate the land to MU for the chemistry department to study the environmental fate of contaminants in the soil and groundwater.

The city could donate the constructed wetlands that receive the city's treated wastewater to MU for the biology department to study ecology.

The state could donate the Augusta State Medical Prison to MU for the resident physicians to take care of the prisoners.

The state could donate Gracewood to the MU Psychiatry and Psychology departments to study mental illness.

Im not sure I would use the

Im not sure I would use the word "covet".

GHSU is a fixture for the survival of Augusta and it needs land to expand. It could have been , Azziz today, and Joe Blow tomorrow, but when land becomes available in this area, you need to get it, especially something like this. Its in the best interest for the institution with or without Azziz. Remember the game Monopoly?

Monopoly is a good analogy,

Monopoly is a good analogy, Deadline. And the money being spent is kind of like Monopoly money. It doesn't count and it doesn't matter because it's only taxpayer money.

"Azziz Field sponsored by

"Azziz Field sponsored by Wal-Mart" Got to love how the bus terminal gets sold out from under the MCG Foundation and now the MU gets the Gardens. Sounds like the city powers just got paid back at the taxpayers expense.

Actually, if you think about

Actually, if you think about it, it would make better logistical and aesthetic sense to have MCG own the bus depot land and put the Wal-Mart on the GGHoF property.

Student housing, research

Student housing, research space, performing arts center, multi-use field for ASU/GHSU/Greenjackets, residential, retail, etc..

This is the best thing to happen to downtown Augusta in decades..

While I have no doutb both ASU/GHSU together can raise millions of dollars.. There's nothing more helpful than having two big time developers involved..

Let's hope Dr. Azziz realizes major universities need both academics and athletics.. Football is the only major sport missing at ASU..

I think someone who keeps

I think someone who keeps posting on doesn't understand that the Greenjackets are not part of ASU or MCG.

I don't see a dorm for college students built inside a stadium for the Greenjackets.

@Insider Information. Huey P. Long did it. The state told him he couldn't build a new stadium for LSU, only dorms. So, he put dorm rooms inside the new LSU stadium that was built.

As I commented on another

As I commented on another "Dr. Azziz" article...I know a lot of people object to some of the things he has done, but I really think he is good for Augusta. At least the GHOF land will be something besides a field of weeds surrounded by a beautiful fence. Augusta needs more progressive thinkers, and one (Dr. Azziz) is better than none.
Matters not whether you agree or disagree, it is my opinion just like your posted opinions.

Everyone needs to understand

Everyone needs to understand that there is no merger of GHSU/ASU. It is , and this has been confirmed by the talking heads at ASU, a takeover of ASU by GHSU. There has been no collaboration, no meeting of the minds, every thing has been dictated by GHSU. All this talk of committees being formed to over see this so called merger is nothing more than rubber stamp and "yessah boss" committees. Azziz was appointed as a hit man, and his first target was Bloodworth, which he quickly and quietly dispatched. There is someone bigger than Azziz behind all of this, Who is it? That is the question. I think we are all in for a big surprise in the end. When it's all said and done I am going to be able to send out a lot of "I told you so's".
