ATLANTA -- Drivers will be able to recognize military heroes in traffic under legislation Rep. Bob Bryant plans to introduce.

Monday, he said he intends to amend current law that grants war veterans special license plates to include anyone awarded the Bronze Star, Silver Star or Distinguished Service Cross.

Bryant, a Savannah Democrat, said he is introducing the bill at the request of Garden City Police Chief David Lyons.

Bryant served himself in the military during the Vietnam War and earned a few medals but none of the top honors for valor that would get a free, distinctive car tag.

“I don’t regret the fact that I’m not a hero,” he said with a smile.

The legislation would also grant the veterans and medal winners tags for their trailers as well. Now, they’re limited to tag for vehicles.

What about the Distinguished

What about the Distinguished Flying Cross? That's between the Bronze Star and Silver Star.

Essentially the Silver Star

Essentially the Silver Star is the 3rd highest military combat decoration, and the Bronze Star is the 4th highest. The Silver Star requires a higher level of gallantry and displays extraordinary heroism..

From what I saw, the Bronze

From what I saw, the Bronze Star means little. I've never seen anyone get the Distinguished Service Cross which is the second highest award. The Silver Star Award meant a lot. The Medal of Honor, even more.

Honestly, I've known some who got the Silver Star when I thought they deserved more, but they didn't quite measure up in the personality factor. Know what I mean?

Frank I, While the DFC can be

Frank I, While the DFC can be given for flight achievement outside of combat, it is also a combat award and is tenth in the order of precedence. The Bronze Star is thirteenth, the Purple Heart is fourteenth.
