District 1 Commissioner Ron Thigpen was re-elected as vice chairman in the Columbia County Commission’s first meeting of the year.

Along with naming members to committees, much of the meeting time - all 18 minutes of it - went to presenting Water Utility worker Donna Clay with the Employee of the Year award, and naming the 53 members of the county’s Roads and Bridges staff as the Team of the Year.

In the only business taking place during the brief session, commissioners had a “do-over,” in the words of Chairman Ron Cross, in approving a second first reading of an ordinance streamlining the way nonprofit organizations apply for temporary alcohol licenses for events.

The previous first reading of the ordinance at the commission’s Dec. 20 meeting had technical errors, requiring two new readings for approval, said County Administrator Scott Johnson. Second reading will be at the commission’s next session, Jan. 17.

And, what will be done about

And, what will be done about the ugly mess on Sandalwood Drive? The project was to be completed by the end of 2011. Do we have any surety that it will be finished by the end of 2012?

Had to get home early to make

Had to get home early to make sure all the automatic timer sprinklers were turned off....Seriously, that's some good advice.

Good choice. Should run

Good choice. Should run Thigpen through a copy machine. Always said he is Columbia County's secret weapon.

Was there a point to the meeting? Couldn't the 18 mins have been strategically worked into a meeting that intended to accomplish something. I'm down with recognizing superlatives and verbalizing their identity, but calling an 18 min meeting just for that purpose? Oh, and i'm confused, is the second first reading occurring on Jan 17th, or will that be the first second reading? Was there a reading at the 18 min meeting or did they just schedule a future reading of amended first reading? I swear it said there was some actual "business" that took place but I can't find it for the life of me.

They forgot to mention that

They forgot to mention that they awarded the "employee of the year" plaque at the meeting. That qualifies as "business" I guess.
