Copenhaver, Azziz make 'Georgia Trend' magazine's 100 most influential list

  • Follow Government

Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver and Georgia Health Sciences University President Ricardo Azziz have again made Georgia Trend magazine’s list of 100 most influential Georgians.

Copenhaver, the only Augusta elected official to be included, was recognized by the magazine for his work in community redevelopment and the creation of new “public spaces” in Augusta, according to a news release from mayor’s assistant Karyn Nixon.

Copenhaver, 44, was named one of 20 “change makers” in city design by the American Architectural Foundation during 2011, it stated.

Azziz, 53, who also serves as CEO of Georgia Health Sciences Health System, was named for his role in leading the organizations through a 10-year growth plan called Transformation 2020.

The plan will remake GHSU into “an integrated, world-class organization delivering excellence in biomedical education, research and clinical service,” the release said.

Huh? What changed? In 2011 they opened the Ruff House on Walton Way and they opened the publicly-financed Marriott parking deck on Reynolds Street. What kind of “change” in city design is that?

P.S. Copenhaver had virtually nothing to do with either one of those projects.

Somebody at Georgia Trend

Somebody at Georgia Trend magazine wants Copenhaver in the Georgia Senate. But he'll have to move to Columbia County to be elected senator from around here.

You know what Copenhaver is

You know what Copenhaver is trying to "change" today? He is spending his time in today's commission meeting trying to get the commissioners to re-read the "standards of conduct" document and to pledge to be nice to each other. How influential is that?

I guess they're giving Azziz

I guess they're giving Azziz credit for the new Dental School building, but that project was in the pipeline long before he was in the picture. Azziz just "watched" that happen; he did not "make" it happen.

Azziz? Influential? Fact: He just eliminated jobs at GHSU all the while having his lunch catered in daily on fine china! This man is not a leader, he is the scum of leadership. Remember this is the same guy that wants to close your precious Laney Walker between 15th and R.A Dent Blvd. The only thing Azziz influenced in me is Nausea.

Copenhaver on the other hand has balanced out the "racial tension" on the board that prevented any kind of productivity. However until Law Enforcement steps up and helps take back the city, I dont ever see a trend of positive growth.

LL, sure wish he would move

LL, sure wish he would move to CC. ARC needs him gone so some real things can be accomplished. As for Azziz, you see who got the credit for someone else's hard work. I believe Azziz is behind the Overlay project and the Deke is going to try to deliver at today's meeting and Wednesdays meeting. I sure hope residents turn out and get their voices heard for their community's sake.

Every president of MCG (Georgia Health Sciences University now) has made Georgia Trend's "top 100". Has nothing to do with what's been accomplished or "influenced" and everything to do with being "president". Whoopedee dooo!!

Just remember "influential"

Just remember "influential" does not mean good. There are plenty of bad influences out there, and Augusta has more than its fair share.

Well, I can say that the Kroc

Well, I can say that the Kroc Center would never have existed if it weren't for a handful of people with Mayor Copenhaver being absolutely critical to getting the approvals through. Many people mention the $20 million campaign, but forget that there was $67.8 million from the Kroc Trustees that had to be approved before even being allowed to begin a campaign. Deke was very involved and it would not have been done without him. Give credit where its due.

After reading the complete

After reading the complete list, I'm even less impressed.

If you're the president of anything beyond a junior college or mayor of a town 2 or more, you made the list.

It's also revealing when you can read the bio of the local people and would still have no idea who they are talking about if the name wasn't listed beside it.
