Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver derides Daily Beast's 'Brokest City' list

  • Follow Government

Augusta’s mayor didn’t have time to comment on Augusta’s No. 10 “brokest city” ranking by online news magazine The Daily Beast, he told a columnist in Columbus, Ga., which was No. 1 in the national survey.

However, Deke Copenhaver applauded Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson for demanding The Beast remove the rankings from its Web site. But Friday, they were still there, with Augusta boasting 9.6 percent unemployment, median household income of $44,447 and average personal debt of $26,204.

Columbus’ No. 1 ranking featured a photo of a rundown nightclub, while Augusta’s No. 10 showed a green at Augusta National Golf Club.

“I applaud Teresa for being a voice for other Georgia cities,” Copenhaver told Columbus Ledger-Enquirer columnist Richard Hyatt. “Those rankings can damage a city’s reputation.”

Copenhaver is typically first to draw attention to metro Augusta’s appearance at the top of online rankings, down to a recent No. 1 suburb ranking of the Columbia County area of Martinez.

“Eventually, the negative and positive surveys balance each other out,” he noted.

Unpublished

We'll be even more broke if the Mayor of Neverland gets his baseball stadium (minus the fact that the mayor of Aberdeen, MD has now broken ethics violations in his home city for coming down here and telling Augusta his fairytale on how great their stadium for Ripkin is... check the Baltimore Sun for your own info). Augusta is mostly ghetto and once the mayor comes out of Conifer place, he'd see it himself.

So Expedia is ripping off

So Expedia is ripping off Augusta on the taxes it owes and then labeling the city as one of the brokest cities in the US on its sister site. Classy. Go get 'em, Deke! Sue them until they go broke!

Interesting way to calculated

Interesting way to calculated the statistics. They used *median* income but *average* (aka the mean) personal debt. What's the probability that the income data set is skewed but the personal debt data set is a normal distribution? Hmmm....

Apparently someone with more

Apparently someone with more credentials than I also found that they were inconsistent in their statistical method and model. Furthermore, the economics professor discovered that their data isn't even correct which makes one wonder if it was intentionally falsified.

The daily beast is trolling for hits on their website. They trick us into clicking on their website then sell the clicks for cash to advertisers. Will we never learn?

A poster yesterday tried to

A poster yesterday tried to say I want it both ways.. When infact these rankings separate A/RC and the metro sometimes.. As you can see though when it's negative A/RC is always the one to blame. I hope Augusta can land the chemical plant in the new few weeks.. It seems people don't realize the amount of jobs Augusta has landed compared to other cities.. We need to get rid of some of the commissioners and RCBOE officals.. Deke = Village at Riverwatch, ADP($40 million-1000 jobs), T-Mobile($30 million- 750), Rural Sourcing(100 IT jobs in the CBD), Solo Cup(70), Convergent(400), Augusta Newsprint $55 million expansion, Potash $40 milllion expansion, Bennett International $35 million 15 jobs, DSM Chemicals purchasing the former 40 acre Pfizer plant, Algae facility $10 million initial investment and 200 jobs, Electrolux $2.5 million and over 300 jobs, etc.. I don't remember Augusta ranking 9th(2010 metros 200k-1m) in corporate expansions before Deke was elected. I mean Augusta ranked 4th in the nation for private sector job growth from Sept 2009-Sept 2010. Only behind the cities of Austin, Oklahoma City, and Charleston. While you can argue Deke is kind of laid back in certain situations, and praises Augusta constantly. Him and Walter Sprouse are both great at attracting companies.

If Augusta has landed so many

If Augusta has landed so many jobs, why is the unemloyment level still so high and so many people living at or below poverty levels?

CarlA.. Call it what you

CarlA.. Call it what you want, but you can't say it's not the truth.. I make sure to separate my personal opinions from the facts that can't be denied.

Patty-P... There's no 'if' Augusta has landed so many jobs.. This is straight from the Dept of Labor...

'The Department of Labor says Augusta's private sector employment grew at a rate of 2.01 percent, or a gain of 3,300 jobs, from September 2009 to September 2010. That was the fourth fastest growth rate among America's largest 100 metropolitan areas.'

What are you comparing the unemployment or poverty levels too? The BLS ranks the metro areas in the US, and Augusta ranked 265th out of 372 for unemployment rates.. I don't think it's a coincidence the RC population starting to growth faster in the year 2006. Keep in mind poverty, etc existed before Deke became the mayor..

Please name the southeastern peers who are attracting so many jobs compared to Augusta? What similar size cities have done so much better than Augusta from 2006-2011??

Riverman.. Martinez was

Riverman.. Martinez was ranked the 11th most affordable growing community in the nation.. Great news for Martinez, because the CNN rankings are in the group with Businessweek, Forbes, Brookings, etc..

The Chronicle is quick to print these negative articles, but the numerous positive rankings never make the paper somehow.. Augusta is one of the top cities in the south with over probably 30 rankings in the last 2 years. Raleigh and Austin are usually always ranked high on these rankings. Before the Chronicle printed the article on the 7th best place to live or 8th best place to retire. Sylvia had to first come out with a editorial explaning why she disagrees..

I know Columbia County is majority white and conservative, but the CBD, Augusta Regional, jobs, industry, entertainment, etc is within Richmond County..

"I know Columbia County is majority white and conservative, but the CBD, Augusta Regional, jobs, industry, entertainment, etc is within Richmond County.."

Yeah, we have nothing going for us out here. Richmond County is such an upscale, beautiful and safe county. Columbia County could learn from it. I wonder what Deke was talking about when he was praising Martinez for being number one? The dummy.

countyman....the labor force

countyman....the labor force for ARC has decreased since September 2010. I don't know where you are getting your information from but when I look on the BLS website the graphs show a steady decline January 2010 to January 2011. Most new jobs replace jobs that were eliminated. Even if poverty existed before Deke became mayor is that a reason to leave the area in its present state? I've seen little improvement in the area so far where jobs are concerned. I am very much for bringing jobs to the area, but Augusta needs a workforce with skills necessary to fill those jobs. There are a large number of people in RC who are living at poverty levels and although you boast about all of these new jobs, how will that improve the socioeconomic status of the great majority that are here now?

As usual people love to bring

As usual people love to bring up RC everday, but please don't mention CC lol.

I never said CC didn't have anything going for it.. Can you deny the large majority of the jobs, industry, entertainment, and Augusta Regional aren't located in Richmond County..

Since when is Grovetown and Harlem considered upscale? I guess South Augusta is considered upscale then.. I do agree some parts of Columbia rd in Grovetown are more upscale, but the 'city' of Grovetown isn't..

Patty P.. Augusta is ranked

Patty P.. Augusta is ranked 265th out of 372 metros.(Unemployment rate)
http://bls.gov/web/metro/laummtrk.htm

The private sector job growth ranking(September 2009-September 2010) came from the Dept of Labor.

http://www2.wagt.com/business/2010/nov/08/augustas-growth-private-sector...

Can you provide a link for your information? Metro Augusta may have lost some jobs since then, but it's still better than most cities..

Riverman.. Does the Chronicle

Riverman.. Does the Chronicle or Deke like Martinez so much? The paper claimed he likes to point out several rankings.. It's not a surprise the bring up the Martinez ranking..

Maybe because Ron Cross is a hater, or he doesn't realize metro Augusta is competing and not solely RC..

Deke lives next to the Augusta Exchange in the Conifer place subdivision.. I know you love CC, but according to Trulia the avg listing in Martinez is only $259,166 compared to the $242,891 in West Augusta.. Keep in mind they separate Summerville($316,344): Forest Hills($300,622 ): Lake Aumond ($235,795): Belair ($163,426), etc from West Augusta

Patty P.. Ok, but that doesn't change the fact Augusta ranked 4th in private sector job growth from Sept 2009-Sept 2010..
