Augusta assistant fire chief placed on paid leave for porn

Assistant Fire Chief Jack Hanley has been placed on leave with pay while Augusta leaders decide how to discipline him for using a city computer to send and receive pornography, officials said Thursday.

Acting Fire Chief Chris James said that in the next three days, the human resources, fire and administrative departments will look at Hanley’s personnel record and city policies to decide how best to handle his case.

City Administrator Fred Russell confirmed Thursday that Hanley has had several disciplinary issues during his time with the fire department.

Hanley, a firefighter since 1975 currently serving as the fire department’s assistant chief for support services, goes on leave days after four other ranking employees, including Fire Chief Howard Willis, announced unexpected plans to retire in the midst of department investigations.

On Wednesday, Deputy City Administrator Bill Shanahan confirmed that city policies had been broken by Hanley and Battalion Chief Tommy Willis, Howard Willis’ brother.

Tommy Willis, who agreed to retire last week after being placed on leave during an investigation, broke policy by using city computers, printers and other resources to steer fire victims to use the company he managed, 1-800-BoardUp. The franchise is owned by Bowles Construction.

Hanley worked under Mike Rogers, the deputy fire chief for technical services, who along with Deputy Fire Chief Carl Scott agreed to retire last week. Rogers and Scott are eligible for their full pensions.

Shanahan said Wednesday that other policies and procedures were broken in January when firefighter Steven Jenne was trapped in a burning house and injured. No investigation into the incident was opened until recently.

James said the department of about 300 employees has a tough road ahead.

“I’m just hoping that we can get through this,” he said. “We really, really have a lot of good guys.”

In my industry, paid leave is called vacation. We get it for hard work and sticking to the script, not for discipline.

"Shanahan confirmed Wednesday

"Shanahan confirmed Wednesday that other policies and procedures were broken in January when firefighter Steven Jenne was trapped in a burning house and injured. No investigation into the incident was opened until recently."

Resolution of this event and other events that resulted in the severe injury of Firefighters is why 80+ firefighters showed up at the commission meeting a few weeks ago. The complaint was that officials at the top were not doing what was necessary for the safety and wellbeing of the firefighters and the overall safety of the community. Mr. Masters, who is a dedicated firefighter, spoke to the commission and has been villainized as being on a "witch hunt". Another Firefighter was injured just yesterday. Mr. Masters is owed an apology. Seeking better safety equipment to safe lives is not a witch hunt. However there's definitely been some spooky goings on in the higher up offices.

Yes, Patty-P, It's worse than you might imagine. He has a lot of splaining to do if his wife finds out. They just never get too old, have a really short attention span and you absolutely have got to keep them entertained.

Pardon the pun, but why not just FIRE the guy? And Augusta's IT department can block porn use? I find that hard to believe.

Time for an entire NEW

Time for an entire NEW LEADERSHIP TEAM at the Fire Department.

It is also time for introducing national standards and credentials.

Many people just don't know when it is time to retire and it appears there are plenty that need to go witin the Fire Department.

Move EMA out of the Fire Department and have somone as good as Pam Tucker who was run out of the area and now does a great job for CC.

Wait one minute, this article

Wait one minute, this article doesn't seem logical. Isn't he on paid leave while an INVESTIGATION is done? This article implies that it is a proven fact that he was using his computer for that purpose. Has he admitted guilt? Have they proven guilt? Have they found any evidence? Why are they trying to figure out his punishment before they have proven his guilt? This article seems rather muddled to me. Please clarify. Could this just be a false accusation to besmirch or retaliate against someone that is in the way of someone else? If this is a false accusation, the person who initiated it should be held accountable. False accusations are happening far too often nowadays.

If Ronnie's people find any child porn on the computer in question, Chief Hanley'll rue the day he first heard the names Edward Tarver and Randall Hall.

Keep this in mind...these men

Keep this in mind...these men LIVE together....(at fire stations) they know a lot of intimate-personal details about each other...once the snow ball starts rolling downhill it will be hard to stop....it is rolling now...we will probably hear more news ...some we really don't want to know.

The news coverage by this

The news coverage by this paper of the rampant dissemination of pornography on city computers has been determined to be isolated to one – that is right – one individual. Details have not been provided so let us not be so quick to judge. How many of us have not forwarded an off-colored joke or two? Good old boy network – maybe. However, these good old boys put their lives on the line every shift. Bet you would have no problem calling them if you had a fire/medical emergency. The “snow ball is rolling” – please! Let’s move on – there is nothing to see here.

That's hilarious to hold the RCSO up as some kind of purveyor of employee morality with their own record. They make the Fire Dept look like missionaries riding bikes down the street.

I must say the FD days were some exciting days.......:)

For the poster to say that distributing photos of naked women is no big deal". " Augusta deserves well-trained, disciplined and professional firefighters, and not a public employee version of animal house". So, you've seen the emails containing nudity that have been distributed throughout the fire department? No? It may be helpful to your credibility if you have just the slightest clue of what you speak. obviously you do not. With all the evidence you seem to be in possession of, maybe the Chronicle, and IT, could interview you.
