Condom blitz coming to SC, Ga.

  • Follow Government

Animal-themed condoms -- 100,000 of them -- are coming to all 50 states, including socially conservative Georgia and South Carolina, as part of an Arizona-based conservation group’s effort to highlight human overpopulation.

One local volunteer is Aiken resident Jennie Beam-Batte.

She said mankind has been irresponsible it managing the planet, and that’s why she decided to get involved in the Center for Biological Diversity’s campaign to draw attention to the world population reaching 7 billion next month.

“I am not against families having kids. My thoughts might be, if you want to have three kids, have two and adopt one,” said Beam-Batte, who is one of 16 volunteer distributors in the Palmetto State.

“I am wanting to reach out to people who have sex without thinking of the outcome, for example, (the creation of) a child and the environmental impact,” she said.

The condoms, which are still being shipped to the 1,200 volunteers nationwide, come in six different packages with original artwork and provocative slogans. They are expected to show up in stores, bars, colleges, workplaces and other locations.

The animals portrayed included the polar bear, jaguar, snail darter, spotted owl, coquí guajón rock frog and American burying beetle, according to a release from the center.

The beetle condoms, for example, urge users to “Cover your tweedle, save the burying beetle.”

“Extinction rates for plants and animals around the globe have been accelerating while the growing human footprint consumes land, water and other natural resources,” according to the center’s release.

The traditional-values organization Palmetto Family is not amused.

“Clearly, as humans, we have responsibility for stewardship of creation,” said Oran Smith, President & CEO of Palmetto Family.

“But to assume that there are too many of us? And that we are squeezing animals out of existence? ... This is not to mention that reduced fertility means fewer workers to pay for retirees,” he said.

“Sure, disconnecting sex from values by passing out condoms isn’t consistent with our values, but in this case it looks like a side gimmick,” added Smith.

“After all, sex sells.”

"I am not against families having kids. My thoughts might be, if you want to have three, have two and adopt one, said Beam-Batte". I wonder how many people asked for her thoughts? She is welcome to produce her family however she chooses, no need for her to push her agenda on others.

Just focus on the poor; that

Just focus on the poor; that is where the overpopulation comes from. You rarely see middle class and higher folks having a brood.

Give the poor the same access

Give the poor the same access to contraceptives that the rich can afford. Is a good start, but there are many wealthy families with a very large number of children.

In the year 1911 there were well less than 2 billion people on this planet. In one hundred years time, our species has seen the population expand to 6.96 billion people. In that same amount of time, countless numbers of other species have become extinct due to human actions. If we keep more than tripling our population, then by the year 2111 there will be approximately 25 billion humans on this earth. This planet does not have infinite resources, humans will fall prey to "survival of the fittest". Where will these 25 billion people live? What will they eat when there is no room for all the people and farm land too? Soylent Green anyone?

I just wonder if the day will come when men will be forced to use condoms...you know...like the new light bulbs we are told to use...some might laugh but think about it--seat belts--toilets--light bulbs--baby carriers---laundry products....we can be fined for over water usage.

Yeah, using an animal-themed condom is really going to make them think about the environment (if they use one at all) once they get their spouse to quit laughing.

Free country AC, we've all got the right to express our opinion. No need to contribute to the erosions of personal liberty by repeating the lie that expressing an opinion is pushing an agenda on others. She's got a right to express it, you've got a right to oppose it. Nothings getting "pushed" onto anyone else.

During the prologue, a narrator (Earl Mann) explains that in modern society, natural selection is indifferent toward intelligence. In a society in which stupid people easily out-breed the intelligent, the result is a crumbling Earth.

The Unites States ranks 139th

The Unites States ranks 139th out of 195 in the world for birthrate, and 6th in the world in wealth (using GDP per capita on a purchasing power parity basis in current international dollars); so
1. We ain't the problem
2. Since we have a high concentration of wealth, and we know that the poor people in the United States have the highest birrthrates here, it is easy to surmise that middle class and rich folk ain't the problem either.

Wonder how many children this

Wonder how many children this person has adopted. Who is she to tell someone to have two kids and adopt one? What's good for one family may not be good for another. It's not the kids fault that they were born to parents that gave them up, and it's not our fault either.

I'm sure if you follow the money, you will find U.S. taxpayer dollars behind this campaign. Sure, they say it's being run by Center for Biological Diversity, but you can bet the got some kind of federal grant for this, probably through the Centers for Disease Control.

"I just wonder if the day will come when men will be forced to use condoms...you know...like the new light bulbs we are told to use.."

I would like to see the day where sperm donors are held accountable for their actions. In the case where the unwed mother is using public assistance or insurance, require that she name the father before receiving any money. If they don't remeber which one, name all the potential ones and DNA test them to figure out which one. Then make THEM pay for the baby they helped make. I bet my 401K you would see the illegitimate birth rate plummet.

“I am not against families

“I am not against families having kids. My thoughts might be, if you want to have three kids, have two and adopt one,” said Beam-Batte, who is one of 16 volunteer distributors in the Palmetto State.
“I am wanting to reach out to people who have sex without thinking of the outcome, for example, (the creation of) a child and the environmental impact,” she said." That's the problem with people who involve themselves in these kooky projects; they believe that they have the answer for the whole wide world. So do people in SC & GA NOT know about condoms? Is this "project" going to increase their use? That is doubtful given the fact that condoms are available from the machines in convenience stores all the way to huge displays @ Walmart. Adoption is wonderful for those who are unable to have children; I know because I've been instrumental in two adoptions within my family and the results are awesome. But I have no need of someone who wants to be involved in this or any project to tell me how my family ought to be structured. So have we totally given up as a lost cause the teaching of abstinence or have we totally lost our moral code?

Haha burninater thinks I'm

Haha burninater thinks I'm trying to suppress someone's right to free speech, never. Ms. Beam-Batte can stand naked in the streets and shout her opinions til the cows come home. However, getting written up in newspapers expressing that "mankind has been irresponsible" and opining on how people should have their kids is trying to push an agenda. I hear liberals gripe about Tea Partiers trying to push their agendas for speaking out. Free speech for pro-life is criticized constantly, people who say anything on here about their Christianity get lambasted by other posters, yeah but that's different, hahaha!

Birth control is free
Unpublished

Birth control is free Cassandra. The poor people have actually more chances at birth control and for FREE!!! They choose not to because that would take away their support and they would have to work. There is no reason for someone who lives 100% off the government with multiple kids and access to free birth control to keep having them. Nothing but excuses, and bad ones at that.

Vito, Women are in control of their own bodies, they choose most of the time to lie about the dad, or keep repeating the same cycle with different deadbeats. To me they are even more responsible than the deadbeat dad!!

And to those of you saying middle class and rich do not have an obsessive breeding problem, you are exactly right. Maybe if the poor refusing to work breeders got jobs they wouldn't have so much time on their hands to keep reproducing at alarming rates that they choose not to support. Hey why not keep the hand out if the government will never make you close it!!! What needs to happen is the government needs to force responsibility on these people for the sake of the kids and the rest of the citizens because they have proven they will NEVER do it on their own!

GaStang, DNA does not lie. A

GaStang, DNA does not lie. A woman can make all the claims she wants, but a DNA test will settle it.

As for the woman being primarily responsible for her body, thus primarily responsible for getting pregnant. Yea, she is responsible for the choices she makes; but the man is also ACCOUNTABLE for the life he participated in making. I for one am flippin tired of young men acting like dogs, hooking up with everyone they can without worry of consequence. The result of that irresponsibility fills our jails and burdens our social services.

And let us not forget,

And let us not forget, that sex for men/boys and sex for women/girls does not come from the same motivations. Females give sex for love, and males give "love" for sex.

Needy females are looking for someone to love them and never abandon. Some get pregnant on purpose because they believe their partners will then not leave them and also the baby will love them unconditionally. They are of course wrong on both accounts but, that doesn't stop them from trying over and over without a clue as to what they are doing.

People need more than condoms, they need understanding of their own selves, what their needs are, and how to get them met in healthy ways.
