One of Columbia County’s longest-serving public officials is in the hospital, but family, friends and other public officials either don’t know or aren’t talking about the nature of her illness.

Columbia County Probate Judge Pat Hardaway

Columbia County Probate Judge Pat Hardaway is listed in fair condition at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Hardaway, who has worked for the county for 47 years, has served as probate judge since her initial election in 1981.

Associate Probate Judge Alice Padgett has been filling in since Hardaway has been dealing with an illness for at least several weeks.

Numerous attempts were made to contact Hardaway’s family and public officials. Those who were reached – Padgett, Columbia County Commission Chair Ron Cross, Deputy Administrator Scott Johnson, Superior Court Chief Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet, Commissioner Charles Allen, and Board of Elections Executive Director Debbie Marshall – either didn’t know about or refused to discuss Hardaway’s illness.

I thought that being an elected official, those that she serves would be entitled to know what's going on. At any rate, I hope it's nothing serious and that she gets better soon.

wether she be an elected

wether she be an elected official or not I don't find it anyone's business but the families on what her condition is, yes we would all like to know the extent of her condition, but , it is still soon and I'm sure the family is having difficulties dealing with this situation. When the family feels comfortable making a public announcement they will. Until then we should all show our respect to the family while keeping them in our prayers.

Judge Hardaway serves in a

Judge Hardaway serves in a public service, not a true "political" position.

Seeing as how she is famous for her work ethic and LONG hours, and APJ Padgett has the bases covered for now, she and her family deserve some time to themselves.

If she were in most "regular" jobs, she would likely have over a year of sick leave coming to her...she has been as solid as a rock.

This woman has been a tremendous asset to our area, and we need to all say a prayer for her and her family tonight.

Oh great another Padgett.

Oh great another Padgett. Well, at least she is not as useless as her husband. I hope people of Columbia County see her as a competent replacement for Judge Hardaway.
