One of Columbia County’s longest-serving public officials is in the hospital, but family, friends and other public officials either don’t know or aren’t talking about the nature of her illness.
Columbia County Probate Judge Pat Hardaway is listed in fair condition at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Hardaway, who has worked for the county for 47 years, has served as probate judge since her initial election in 1981.
Associate Probate Judge Alice Padgett has been filling in since Hardaway has been dealing with an illness for at least several weeks.
Numerous attempts were made to contact Hardaway’s family and public officials. Those who were reached – Padgett, Columbia County Commission Chair Ron Cross, Deputy Administrator Scott Johnson, Superior Court Chief Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet, Commissioner Charles Allen, and Board of Elections Executive Director Debbie Marshall – either didn’t know about or refused to discuss Hardaway’s illness.
