Group studying laws on immigration meets

ATLANTA --- A committee created to discuss possible immigration legislation for Georgia heard from several speakers Thursday as it gathered information on the issue at its first meeting.

Former last month with 14 Republican lawmakers, the committee is chaired by Rep. Matt Ramsey of Peachtree City and Sen. Jack Murphy of Cumming. Thursday's meeting was the first of three planned before the legislative session begins in January.

Ramsey said at the meeting that the committee plans to study the issue of immigration and identify its impact on Georgia.

"This is an issue that certainly evokes a great deal of passion from people who have strong opinions on it," Ramsey said. "We're here to learn."
