Study ranks Ga. road system among tops in U.S.

ATLANTA -- Georgia’s state road system ranks among the nation’s best in an annual study comparing highway networks released Thursday.

In its 19th annual comparison of states, the Los Angeles-based Reason Foundation pegged Georgia’s roadways at ninth best in 2008, the year for which it had the most recent data. The nonprofit think tank gave Georgia the same overall rank in 2007.

South Carolina came in at sixth that year. First place went to North Dakota.

For the latest comparison, Georgia ranked first in the quality of its Interstates, urban and rural, although it fell to 31st in terms of urban Interstate congestion and fatalities.

In terms of 2008 spending, Georgia ranked in the bottom fourth or so for the four ways the study looked as disbursements. That was the same year that financial, management and accounting problems were coming to light at the Department of Transportation. Those problems eventually led to a department deficit that halted any launching of new projects, the replacement of the commissioner and a top financial official, and a legislative overhaul.

No surprise here. I have

No surprise here. I have traveled in other states and I really think our roads are the best. Of course we don't rank right up there in terms of what we spend for education, so our people are dumb, but the ride is nice.

South Carolina was SIXTH?

South Carolina was SIXTH? The right lane on I-20 West from Columbia to the Ga/SC line, needs to have houses built over those basements. SIXTH! Get real!

Obviously they didn’t count

Obviously they didn’t count roads built, designed, or maintained by the Richmond County engineering department. That group has a collective IQ of about 6.

The only roads in GA that

The only roads in GA that need help are those funded by the Federal Govt - case in point -- I-20 from Augusta to Atlanta.

I am very close friends with a former publisher of Reason magazine. They have an interesting viewpoint on things. Basically, they are a Libertarian think tank.

Evidently they did not go

Evidently they did not go through Warrenton, Thomson or Harlem. The side streets are more akin to dirt roads. Tire and alignment businesses must love these roads.

If S.C. roads are ranked 6th,

If S.C. roads are ranked 6th, Haiti is the Caribbean Riviera. Just having GA roads ranked worse than S.C. tells you just how bad this survey is. They evidently couldn't see the real roadways in S.C. for the tall grass on the right-a-ways. That said, it's a good one, I still haven't stopped laughing.

They also didn't check the

They also didn't check the S.C. roads during or after a rain storm. The water flows to the center of the road instead of "OFF" the road. The roads are ranked number 1 in Hydroplane Digest.
