Georgia, S. Carolina awarded test grants

  • Follow Government

Georgia and South Carolina are part of two groups of states awarded grants to develop new standardized tests, the U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday.

The new tests are designed to move beyond multiple-choice bubble sheets and conform to the Common Core State Standards adopted by 36 states, including Georgia and South Carolina.

They will assess students' mastery of math and English skills from third grade through high school.

The grant requests are part of the Race to the Top competition. They will be awarded to the Partnership for Readiness for College and Careers ($170 million) and the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium ($160 million).

Both groups comprise at least 26 states each.
