New Ga. law punishes contractors using illegals

  • Follow Government

ATLANTA  -- One of the laws that took affect Thursday imposes a new punishment on government contractors that put illegal aliens on their payroll.

Contractors and vendors will lose the chance for a year to bid on future contracts if they’re found to be adding undocumented workers. The companies must check the citizenship and work-permit status of every new hire with a federal database called E-Verify to comply with the law.

Actually verifying worker status has been required of all contractors since 2007, but the new law brings the sanctions that advocates hope will ensure adherence.

“If you have a law with no penalty, you really only have a piece of paper,” said D.A. King, head of the Dustin Inman Society that lobbies for strict immigration enforcement.

King rejects arguments that contractors must use illegal aliens because too few Americans will take dirty jobs, such as those in construction or road paving. The majority of those jobs are already held by U.S. citizens, he notes, so filling the rest of them shouldn’t be impossible.

The new penalty almost didn’t become law. Separate House and Senate versions of broader immigration bills that contained the penalty provision stalled in committees in each chamber. And a pared-down version only containing the penalty got watered down in a House committee when Rep. Jay Shaw, R-Camilla, introduced an amendment he said was requested by the Georgia Municipal Association and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia. Only on the floor, during the final debate was Shaw’s amendment removed.

Both associations said Friday they were only trying to clarify the wording of the penalty. Each said it has been aggressive in training local officials on the need to get certification from contractors that they are verifying their new hires’ citizenship.

King figures the lead up to Independence Day is a good time to ensure U.S. workers aren’t unfairly competing with illegal aliens for jobs.

“With the high unemployment rate we have not, I am hopeful this new law will stop the hiring of black-market labor in Georgia,” he said.

Damnn GOOD DEAL----NOW PASS ONE LIKE ARIZONA's

why is this a NEW law?

if this law is REALLY enforced, your hamburgers/hot dogs/chicken sandwiches just got MUCH more expensive...but it's very unlikely to change anything else of substance...big business/the food industry will always find a way around the laws...they always have.

Maybe this will help lower the unemployment rare.

Only applies to new hires? A joke.

crackerjack

Too bad it only applies to Goverment contractors. Local contractors are having a hard time bidding against out-of-town contractors who hire illegals so they can low-ball their bids.

I'AM looking for work and Ive been to a lot of place's that have employee's that speak little or no english. Not always doing something I really want to do but right now a job is a job.
Don't believe for a second they are only doing jobs Americans won't do.

One industry to watch is roofing. Those companies that offer cheaper prices to reroof hire a bunch od illegals. I got caught with one, although the work was good, none could speak English.

"D.A. King, head of the Dustin Inman Society that lobbies for strict immigration enforcement". More like hate group. http://www.adl.org/civil_rights/anti_immigrant/da_king.asp Quote by King, undocumented immigrants are “not here to mow your lawn – they’re here to blow up your buildings and kill your children, and you, and me.” Reminds me a lot of the old J B Stoner type rhetoric, "why the n want integration is because n want our white women". Once again AC, no research done on who you're quoting.

Does this mean that if a contractor is hired to install carpet in the capitol, yhat the carpet manufacturer is required to ensure that no illegals are on the payroll? That would seriously deplete Shaw industries and close down a couple of cities in north Georgia. Does the law apply to subcontractors working on state contracts? Or better yet, what about contracts the city lets every year to spruce up the area for the Masters, and all you see are people who only speak mexican?

Techfan, your CNN style of comparing horse apples to oranges is one of the reasons we're in the politically correct mess we're in now. Why is "illegal immigrant" so difficult to comprehend for the left? J B Stoner? please!

We need to start applying this kind of law to ALL businesses within the state, not only government contractors. It is not that difficult to require using E-verify to have some assurance that the SS# of new hires is legitimate and should be part of a background check. Identity theft is getting to be too common these days and does not only apply to illegal aliens.

Why not start with the gazillion Mexican eateries in Both Counties here; then go across the river, that should just about leave only Taco Bell open after the feds clean up these hideouts for illegals. No body wants to play by the rules today. They think they don't apply anymore for some reason. When you have a useless President who does not enforce the Federal Laws and condemns the States who try, this is what you end with. Where's Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio when we need him?

This "new" law was passed in 2007 with the stipulation that it did not go into effect until 2010.............just another example of the Georgia Legislature and their bassackward processes.

I think that harvesting illegals for organs needed in transplants should be legalized. That would make them a viable commodity instead of just a drain on the economy. I think it may also discourage some of the immigration.

As far as the morality aspect of the situation goes, I think it is years ahead of killing babies for convenience. At least the "victim" would have the choice instead of the perpetrator.

Take a look at Georgia: We have a Republican Governor, two Republican Senators and a fair number of Republican state officials. In 2006 many anti-illegal activist joined efforts and spent many hours of our precious time convincing our legislators to save the future of Georgia. Laws were passed, but when there is no will for enforcement and the Governor refuses to act...then it is a waste of time and taxpayers’ funds.

For years I have requested Perdue to act upon the crimes of illegals. My pleas to act against murders, rapes, robberies, dangerous drug cartels…also the dangers of illegals working in food establishments with no oversight on the diseases they bring to America was not important enough to warrant anything other than a "canned letter". His comment was always... "It’s a Federal issue".

Well Governor Brewer has proven Perdue to be a liar. You must first put priorities in proper perspective for the issue to become a "state issue". The little bald globalist is off to Cuba and Argentina to talk about trade. Well now I know when the globalist talk like this...it equates to more illegals invading America. Remember NAFTA? Remember CAFTA? I guess 24 per cent ACTUAL unemployment is not enough. Perdue apparently wants to build a legacy for himself. However, the one I will remember is the one I just outlined above. The only people who will be happy with such are those who are enemies of Western civilization and America. Foolish Perdue is still advocating growth out of one side of his mouth, while the other side is demanding our limited resources...mainly water... be rationed. My God we must be crazy to continue to swallow this lunacy.

What should be clear to everyone is that we have career politicians who have sold out the future of America. W hat do we have to show for our hard earned dollars that afforded this bunch a cushy lifestyle? Well I will tell you.

• Georgia has a $3 billion budget deficit.
• Programs put in place for the retiring baby boomers are completely bankrupt because of the rush to pay for the illegals and their many, many, many, many children. This all the while we are encouraged at every avenue to cut back on the births of white western civilization.
• Generations of our youth have been lost to the huge volumes of drugs which flow freely across our borders to keep the corrupt Mexican government afloat. This action continues uninterrupted with the help of the Mexican government and their Military and the blessings of United States government.
• Property taxes increasing due to the huge numbers of schools built to accommodate the illegal criminals and the ever growing population of "anchor babies" Remember, Western civilization had a zero growth rate. The same people who tell Americans to control their populations are the same who fight to keep the Mexicans flooding across our borders.
• Atlanta, Georgia’s capitol is more appropriately called the other Mexican Border. This is where tens of dozens of drug cartel members peddle their poison making sure that the Black communities do not rise above slum conditions.
• Black Mothers often run to the nearest microphone to claim they want a better education for their children, but can't seem to understand this isn't going to happen as long as their kids are high on heroine, crack cocaine, meth and marijuana.
• Once again we can thank ignorance on one end and a corrupt government on the other end for these drugs being more accessible than food and water.
• Atlanta now has bragging rights to being Mexico's drug distribution center to the world.
• Actual unemployment being closer to 24% with jobs that once went to Americans …now belonging exclusively to illegal aliens who serve as an infrastructure to the drug cartels.
• Tuberculosis which once had been eradicated in the U.S. now returning with a vengeance. This disease regardless of what you are told is now harder to treat and cost taxpayers millions per case.
• Overcrowded hospitals and clinics that have to charge those with insurance ridiculous prices to accommodate illegal invaders who have no insurance. This mandated by those elected officials who should have been putting you and your children ahead of criminal invaders.
• Overcrowded schools with our children getting less of an education than most third world countries.
• Sanctuary cities: Gainesville, Lawrenceville, Dalton, Atlanta…just to name a few …all with once beautiful areas being lost to Mexican slums, graffiti and signs in Spanish.
• Huge increases in automobile insurance to accommodate the uninsured Mexicans that drive unhampered and unafraid.
• The people you elected to serve this Republic have made sure the numbers of rapes, murders, diseases and drug deals are not a part of a data base. But…I promise you they are keeping an eye on each time you blow your nose.
• Our nursing homes and veterans homes are a disgrace. Nursing home owners are using antipsychotic drugs in lieu of hiring nurses and aides. For a country whose elderly are facing dementia …this is nothing more than euthanasia in the form of a daily pill. These elderly are the people who paid into these programs that the Mexicans have drained dry with the help of politicians. Now these elderly are expected to give again…this time by just dying quietly and quickly. The drug companies are getting mega wealthy and Americans are getting the shaft.
• Board of Regents willingly turning American citizens away so illegal Mexicans can step up and take the place in our colleges and universities that should have been reserved for America’s legal citizens. All this at the expense of a jobless, homeless and soon to be hungry American citizenry.

Small communities in Georgia awakened some time ago to the fact they are being invaded by crime and do not have the funds nor sophistication to handle the volume.

If America can survive this treasonous onslaught by both parties, I hope people remember that uninformed, lazy, apathy laden voters can destroy a nation.
