ATLANTA - The Georgia House has voted to require that larger local governments post their budgets and audits online.
The House voted unanimously today to mandate the disclosure for cities and counties with budgets greater than $1 million. The bill's sponsor, Rep. Ed Lindsey, said the local governments are already required to produce the fiscal reports. The Atlanta Republican said placing them on the web would provide greater transparency for Georgia citizens.
The Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia would be charged with posting the reports on line. Lindsey said he expected there would be little cost involved.
The bill now moves to the Senate.
Oh no. This isn't going to work here in rivercity. What business is it of ours if a commissioner wants to sweeten a friend or family members pocket. Autually what is needed is a posting of the check accounts to actually see who the payee is instead of a bogus company title with no meaning. Another good one would be to have the commissioners post their gas card usage and mileage on a monthly basis. In that regard, I wonder if the finance department is issueing 1099 forms for free gas? According to the IRS they are supposed to.
What budget section will the "Paying Off Chiquita" type checks go under?
