Developer Sean Power has requested approval of a proposed amendment to the Aiken County Zoning Map that would change 240 acres along Rudy Mason Parkway, Richland Avenue East and Old Wagener Road from industrial to rural zoning. The council will hold a public hearing and decide whether to approve the first reading of the ordinance, County Administrator Clay Killian said. Part of the land is a short distance from East Aiken Elementary, Mr. Killian said Monday.
Mr. Power said the park would feature Olympic-style shooting events for youth and adults. The range would only be used for special events by invitation only.
"The park would hold state, regional and national events," Mr. Power said. "It could bring in millions of dollars of revenue. Cities across the country have similar parks like this."
County council members will also consider a proposed ordinance to authorize the conveyance of a deed to Hamilton Drive and Nielsen Street to the City of Aiken. The city would like to own the roadways to improve traffic flow into the Walmart on Whiskey Road, Mr. Killian said.
Other council business will include a closed meeting in which members will review proposals from 13 architectural firms interested in designing the county complex, Mr. Killian said.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the council chambers, 736 Richland Ave.
