Democrats at Evans hit GOP health stance

  • Follow Government

A panel headed by a group of area Democrats attacked Republican resistance to health care reform on Thursday during a forum in Evans.

Republican criticism that the health care bill currently being debated in the U.S. Senate would weaken health coverage for veterans is untrue, said Columbia County Democratic Party Chairman Robert Gray.

In fact, Mr. Gray said, the bill would expand mental health treatment for veterans, instigate building new transition centers for wounded veterans, and improve outpatient medical care.

"(President Obama's) administration is not taking care of the soldiers; it's a myth," he said to the nearly 30 people who attended the forum at the Columbia County Library.

Mr. Gray said Democrats need to continue to work "to remove the Republican smokescreen" concerning health care.

Lowell Greenbaum, the chairman of the Richmond County Democratic Party and the former director of pharmacology at the Medical College of Georgia, called the health care bill "an excellent piece of legislation."

The bill would insure 94 percent of Americans, he said.

Currently, only 50 percent of working American women receive health coverage from their employers, Dr. Greenbaum said. The health care bill would force all employers to provide coverage to women employees.

It also would better regulate nursing homes, prevent insurers from using many pre-existing medical conditions as an excuse not to insure, and eventually save taxpayers' dollars, he said..

Dr. Greenbaum attacked 10th District Republican Congressman Paul Broun for opposing the legislation. "We've got a guy here who says, 'No, no, no.' " Dr. Greenbaum said. "We've got to confront him and say, 'Yes, yes, yes.' "

The forum was organized by Pull the Plug PAC, an Athens-based political action group formed to oust Dr. Broun, who has been an outspoken critic of the president's health care plan.

The forum was to give the

The forum was to give the Dems a chance to show why the health care takeover was necessary. Instead, they highlighted the problems with "government efficiency" and avoided the Repub complaints of lack of portability, tort reform and caps, and existing condition coverage. Also, who NEEDS to be covered in the social program is also in dispute. As long as the emphasis is on the government takeover and not on effect of the bill on the society, there will be this silly p.r. war. The whole mess needs to be scrapped and any problems need to be addressed in the open. All of the secret plans and intentionally confusing wording needs to be removed.

Things like this make a difference...Lowell is changing minds, winng the argument, and showing other democratic leaders how to do this. He is a trail blazer for those who fear the wilderness of partisan politics surrounding this issue of Healthcare. A visonary with clout given his position as Chairman of the Richmond County Democratic Party...You GOP types might as well fold under pressure like this.

The Republicans have a better

The Republicans have a better idea, and it won't cost nearly as much as the Democrats' plan. There are no penalties for NOT signing up for insurance in the Republican plan. The only ones really benefiting with the Democrat plan are the insurance companies. Wake up! The Republicans are more democratic than the Democrats! No to forced insurance!!!!

Brad Owens is a political

Brad Owens is a political genius. His use of sarcasm is perfect. Lowell is an idiot spewing out 'truths' passed down by his daddy. 30 people is a huge mark, at the Columbia County library, I wonder how many were just in there looking for books. Maybe next time they could do a screening of "Soylent Green" let you pro-government health care lovers see what's coming.

The meeting might have had

The meeting might have had credibility if they had not let Lowell in. He has been screaming foolish statements for years. But anyone knows that all democrats want is bigger government controlling us all. As far as I am concern I want government out of my life, the only resposibility government has for me is to protect and defend.

Oh Notreally you mean like all those hate filled race mongerers that gathered in front of the municipal building and railed on about how a white man shouldn't be elected because it is a majority black district. How rthey even went as far as saying they would sue to keep a white man from holding the seat even though that was the wishes of the voters.Yeah I agree I just hate those racist gatherings.....

Well I will correct you since

Well I will correct you since you are painting me with a racist brush. I consider myself neither party. I vote on who represents me best...color nor party plays into that. Lately I have more leanings toward the republican arguments on healthcare but I disagree with them on other issues. I never judge by color nor age but I see how people like you justify your thinking. Age is no excuse for the racist comments made by black leaders and supported by the black community. Let a white person make a racist statement and it's all over the news. We seem to condone it from blacks. I don't see this as a "over 40" person. I see this as a human being. I am sorry you 9 like justus and a few others" refuse to see any bad in your own race and always play the race card when confronted with the truth. That's your loss.
