WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

➤ Starting dates

Columbia County: Aug. 6

McDuffie County: Aug. 8

Richmond County: Aug. 11

Aiken County: Aug. 18

➤ Richmond County registration

District Web site: www.rcboe.org

Registration for Richmond County students will be Aug. 6 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Richmond County students transferring to another county school will simply have to present a report card from their former school during registration, but Georgia students transferring into Richmond County from another school system will have to present a copy of their latest report card, a Social Security card, completed immunization forms and a four-point eye, ear and dental form.

Those transferring into the county from out of state will have to present all of the same articles as Georgia transfers, along with a certified birth certificate.

Students who cannot attend their school’s registration on the given dates can arrange a separate appointment with the principal before school starts. Open houses will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 for middle schools, on Aug. 7 at high schools and Aug. 8 at elementary schools.

➤ Immunizations

All school students in Georgia from the ages of 4 to 6 and all students transferring to a Georgia school are required to have immunizations. The current immunization requirements are:

• Four to five doses of DTaP

• Three or four doses of polio

• Two doses of varicella

• Two doses of MMR

• Four to five doses of pneumococcal

• Two doses of hepatitis A

• Four doses of Hib

Under new immunization standards, seventh-grade students born after Jan. 1, 2002, and those entering the Georgia school system in grades eight through 12 must receive a dose of Tdap vaccine and one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine to attend classes.

Parents have 30 days from the start of school to update their children’s immunizations.

➤ New exams debut this year

This was the last year Georgia students took Criterion Referenced Competency Tests and the End of Course Tests. These exams will be replaced by the Georgia Milestones testing system for this school year. According to a news release from the state Department of Education, Georgia Milestones will be more in line with existing Common Core standards and will be more rigorous in order to “better prepare” students for college and careers. For more information, visit www.gadoe.org.

➤ New superintendent

This school year will bring a new superintendent for Richmond County residents as Dr. Frank Roberson leaves office August 22. School board members are currently sifting through a pool of potential candidates and making selections for interviews. If no candidate has been selected by Aug. 1, Deputy Superintendent Tim Spivey will act as an interim superintendent until a candidate has been selected.

➤ Tax-free holidays

Georgia’s tax free holiday is Aug. 1 and 2. South Carolina’s is Aug. 1-3. Shoppers won’t pay state and local sales tax on clothing, school supplies, computers, printers and software.
