Two Columbia County School Board trustees retained their seats for another term in Tuesday’s primary election.

Staten Heard: 39%, 1,383 votes
Mike Sleeper: 61%, 2,119 votes

Mike Sleeper earned a fourth term as District 3 representative with 2,119 votes, or 60.3 percent of the votes in the race against Staten Heard.

Newcomer Heard, a retired manufacturing logistics specialist, garnered 1,383 votes, or 39.36 percent.

“I think he’s the incumbent,” Heard said after the race, not discounting making another bid for the seat in the future. “Things have been going pretty well and maybe people aren’t looking for a change at this point.”

Sleeper, a computer security specialist, has served on the board for nearly 10 years and is excited to take on another four-year term.

“I’m relieved it’s over, not just for me, but for the county,” Sleeper said after results finalized for his and other county elections. “I am relieved for the direction our county is going to head in. There’s a great partnership between the schools and the county and I know that is going to continue and we all have the best interests of the county in mind.

“I really am thankful and grateful that the voters have seen fit to put me back in office for another term and they trust me to do what they think is right for the school system.”

Incumbent Kristi Baker representing District 2 ran unopposed and got 2,561 votes.

Another term for Sleeper?

Another term for Sleeper? Oh, well. This should help him in his bid to run for county commissioner the next go round. Even though I'm very against Sleeper, I'm hoping he does what's best for the schools and for the kids, and not his own edification.

Sleeper? Ugh.

I was really hoping we could get him out of office, since he's against teachers...

Just proves

This just proves that the voters are sleeping. This guy needs to go just like his father-in-law Ron Cross. Teachers need to unite and endorse candidates of their choosing from now on.
