The Richmond County Board of Education adopted a property tax increase Thursday after holding a third public hearing on the issue.

The rate will increase 5.16 percent to 19.982 mills. That will mean $30 more in taxes on a home with a market value of $100,000 for a total of $699 in school taxes per year.

A $300,000 home will have a $100 tax increase for $2,297 in school taxes per year.

There were no public comments Thursday, unlike last week, when a group of parents and citizens protested outside the board meeting about higher taxes and lack of transportation for alternative program students.

How about putting a cap on

How about putting a cap on any spending increases for the next 15 years and quit building these Taj Mahal facilities where almost half the students don't even graduate. Sorry state of affairs!

Taxpayers lose again.

RCBOE has done SO WELL with the money they already have that we should give them lots more. Test scores, dropout rates, dumbing-down of curriculum, etc. What's not to like? Let's give them even more than this...
(Don't worry, next year it will rise again!!)

Instead of Tossing $$$$ at a problem

How about tossing a working solution at it instead?.

We did not have fancy schools in the 60-80's, or new books, or highly trained teachers with extra child certs. But what we did have were better test scores?

So is it now the buildings, the books, the teachers or the US Dept of Education?

Or maybe RCBOE just has a large group of slow learning problem students now and for PC and political reasons won't go there?

What happens when the tax

What happens when the tax base can no longer afford all of these raises? (some say we are already there) What happens when all the tax payers move out of Richmond county? (again, some say we are already there) Taxes, Taxes, Taxes in Richmond County, but no results. I think a new plan is needed other than the current, Build Now! Tax More Later!

Paying even more for nothing much

Lots of sorry, disinterested and burned out teachers and tons of sorry, disinterested, disruptive attendees.

We're paying for people to hang out five days a week, people who shouldn't even be at these "schools" for all the good it does them or the community that foots their bills.

Make them all charter schools and allow teachers to maintain their classroom by booting out the "students" who routinely disrupt classes or mess with other students. When teachers and principals are given authority and support to require students to behave appropriately in order to be allowed to go to school, then things will go back to the high levels of function and education that generally described public education before about 1970.

We paid less and got waaaaaaay more back then, all because teachers were able to teach, because students were, well, children and adolescents who knew what was demanded of them. And they were afraid of their principals and most, also afraid of their parents' wrath.

At least we can re-instill fear of the principals. Especially if we're having to pay such a ridiculous price for babysitting nitwits.

Fiat_Lux almost had it right!

"Paying even more for nothing much." He should have said: Paying even more for nothing. Period!

The sky is always falling in Richmond County, but the Columbia County school board approve their tax increase just a few months ago.

Why not add a new additional counter that shows how a person voted NOT on a comment, but the persons Total Ups and Total Downs votes.

I think if the product put

I think if the product put out by Col. county schools was the same as what Rich. county schools are putting out then you would hear about the sky falling just as fast over there.

Taxes

Yes, Columbia County did raise taxes, however their school system has no furlough days for teachers like Richmond County.
