The Richmond County Board of Education adopted a property tax increase Thursday after holding a third public hearing on the issue.

The rate will increase 5.16 percent to 19.982 mills. That will mean $30 more in taxes on a home with a market value of $100,000 for a total of $699 in school taxes per year.

A $300,000 home will have a $100 tax increase for $2,297 in school taxes per year.

There were no public comments Thursday, unlike last week, when a group of parents and citizens protested outside the board meeting about higher taxes and lack of transportation for alternative program students.

How about putting a cap on

How about putting a cap on any spending increases for the next 15 years and quit building these Taj Mahal facilities where almost half the students don't even graduate. Sorry state of affairs!

Taxpayers lose again.

RCBOE has done SO WELL with the money they already have that we should give them lots more. Test scores, dropout rates, dumbing-down of curriculum, etc. What's not to like? Let's give them even more than this...
(Don't worry, next year it will rise again!!)

Instead of Tossing $$$$ at a problem

How about tossing a working solution at it instead?.

We did not have fancy schools in the 60-80's, or new books, or highly trained teachers with extra child certs. But what we did have were better test scores?

So is it now the buildings, the books, the teachers or the US Dept of Education?

Or maybe RCBOE just has a large group of slow learning problem students now and for PC and political reasons won't go there?

What happens when the tax

What happens when the tax base can no longer afford all of these raises? (some say we are already there) What happens when all the tax payers move out of Richmond county? (again, some say we are already there) Taxes, Taxes, Taxes in Richmond County, but no results. I think a new plan is needed other than the current, Build Now! Tax More Later!

Paying even more for nothing much

Lots of sorry, disinterested and burned out teachers and tons of sorry, disinterested, disruptive attendees.

We're paying for people to hang out five days a week, people who shouldn't even be at these "schools" for all the good it does them or the community that foots their bills.

Make them all charter schools and allow teachers to maintain their classroom by booting out the "students" who routinely disrupt classes or mess with other students. When teachers and principals are given authority and support to require students to behave appropriately in order to be allowed to go to school, then things will go back to the high levels of function and education that generally described public education before about 1970.

We paid less and got waaaaaaay more back then, all because teachers were able to teach, because students were, well, children and adolescents who knew what was demanded of them. And they were afraid of their principals and most, also afraid of their parents' wrath.

At least we can re-instill fear of the principals. Especially if we're having to pay such a ridiculous price for babysitting nitwits.

folks when your school

folks when your school district is failing to properly educate the children combined with sorry azz parents who send their children to school not to lean but to get them out of their hair for 8 hours and care nothing about if they can read or write and on top of that the the schools offer free breakfast and lunch because in the words of the enablers "some of deese kieds caint not be gittin fed at dey house fo sho" and the populations of most schools consists of "gub-ah-ment prah-jeck" families getting some type of free "gub-ah-ment" welfare this is what you get...the government squeezing the remaing few who property owners to get more in order to give it to more and more welfare leeches, moochers, and parasitic broodmares who do nothing but stay on their backs/knees birthing more and more babies they knowingly cannot take care of but it really doesn't matter becasue the government in one form or another will raise their children for them and pay them (in the form of welfare, foo stamps, free housing, energy assistance, medical care...etc) to continue to have baby after baby so they can be standing in from of a law-abiding/gainfully employed taxpayer as they unload their shopping cart full of steaks, bags of shrimp, king/snow crab legs, as they talk on their "obama phone" about how they "gotta git to da stoe/mall to buy da outfit and gits mah hair/nails done and i's will meet you at da club dis eh-bah-ning" and making plans for the picnic dey will be habbin dis weekend....

Venus Cain.......just because

Venus Cain.......just because there were not a lot of people coming down to make opposing comments DOES NOT mean taxpayers are being "supportive". Many of us are actually furious but we know there is no point in wasting our time to come down and make comments. We know your minds were made up and that you were just going through the motions. Be assured....the taxpayers are furious that you have raised our taxes to support the Richmond County Feeding Station, Baby Sitting Service, and FAILED School System.

We live in August/Richmond County. We know that is pointless to oppose having taxes raised, our property rezoned, having overpriced garbage service forced on us, having our garbage service cut in half while still being charged the already overpriced rate, or having our school taxes increased while paying exorbitant administrator salaries and teachers that do nothing but teach teachers.....I assume because the teachers being taught are unqualified. We don't come down and make comments because essentially we have given up on YOU, our representatives of bad government. Most of us are just looking for an affordable way out of this county or are hoping to die before you and the commission tax us out of our homes.

And all of this because the state cut some funding. Well guess what? School systems AND municipalities should NEVER become dependent on state and federal money. They MUST learn to operate within the constraints of what the local taxpayers can afford. State and federal money can disappear at any given time based on economic or political whim. If you don't believe me, ask the folks who USED to work at Fort Discovery. We MUST keep our budgets and our programs at a level that can be supported by the local taxpayers. State and federal money should be used like gravy......it makes the food taste better when you have it but you will not starve to death if you don't have it.

And what is the Richmond County Feeding Station and Baby Sitting Service going to do when the feds cut out the money for the Free Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Weekend Sack Meals program? Are you going to raise our taxes again to support this WELFARE FRAUD program? Can I look forward to Venus Cain on the 6 o'clock news saying "but it's for the starving children".....which aren't even hungry because we are paying to feed them TWICE for every meal. With 47.5 million people on Food Stamps, if there is a hungry child out there THEIR PARENTS SHOULD BE IN JAIL FOR WELFARE FRAUD and the children put up for adoption. And if schools would START EDUCATING AND DISCIPLINING children INSTEAD OF FEEDING THEM, maybe we wouldn't have 47.5 million on FOOD STAMPS. It takes a village......of idiots.....to spend THIS MUCH MONEY and still turn out stupid, uneducated, undisciplined, unemployable kids.

I think if the product put out by Col. county schools was the same as what Rich. county schools are putting out then you would hear about the sky falling just as fast over there.

Taxes

Yes, Columbia County did raise taxes, however their school system has no furlough days for teachers like Richmond County.
