Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center is on pace this year to exceed the number of children it examined in 2012 at its annual school screening program.

On July 27, the Fort Gordon hospital saw 402 children. The program will run again Saturday and conclude Aug. 17.

In all of 2012’s screenings, 1,132 children were seen by health care professionals in hope of detecting and preventing infectious diseases in Georgia’s and South Carolina’s school systems, said Wesley Elliott, a spokesman for the hospital.

Elliott said children between the ages of 4 and 19 – and eligible for medical care through the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System – are welcome to get a “one-stop, four-point” school screening at Eisenhower.

Georgia law requires first-time students to pass a medical screening. For entrance into the sixth grade, they must have a second measles, mumps and rubella immunization, with proof of vaccination.

South Carolina schools require proof only of current immunizations.

Elliott said parents at the screening can gather family health education materials, talk with a dietician for nutritional information and receive guidance for future consultations. Information will be available about benefits and TRICARE enrollment.

“The school screening is not a sports physical,” Elliott said by e-mail.

“Please contact your primary care manager to schedule a sport, cheerleader or band physical.”
