The chairman of the Department of Chemistry at East Carolina University has been named the dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at Georgia Regents University.

Rickey Hicks, who has 30 years of experience in academic, industrial and government settings, will begin his new role Jan. 2.

At East Carolina, Hicks helped raise more than $350,000 for laboratory equipment upgrades and established the undergraduate teaching assistants program, according to a news release. He also helped secure more than $100,000 for endowed scholarships and established the department’s first external advisory board of local business leaders.

Hicks has researched antimicrobial peptide chemistry and also participated in funded projects on the development of therapeutic agents to protect soldiers and others from biological warfare agents.

Before joining East Carolina in 2006, Hicks worked as chief of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.

Hicks is also the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Membrane Science and Technology, holds five patents and has been published in 47 scientific journals.
