GRU merger featured in Time magazine article

  • Follow Education

The merger of Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities into Georgia Regents University was featured in a recent Time magazine article on higher education consolidations.

The news magazine quoted GRU President Ricardo Azziz on the logistics of the process and the financial and academic benefits of such a venture.

“Size matters, even in academia,” Azziz said in the article published online Friday. “A lot of times we talk about students preferring small colleges, and that may be true, but it is much more costly to maintain all of the moving parts at a small college than at a larger university.”

Azziz also commented on the diplomacy and savvy required in a consolidation process and the necessity for time to prove the benefits.

According to the Time article, the spiraling costs of running separate institutions during a time of rising tuition and reduced state funding has led to an increase of consolidations across the country.

Should Have Asked Us

It's a good thing Time didn't ask the Augusta population what it thinks of the way Azziz has handled the consolidation.

Complaining Again?

Here's to hoping that all the Debbie Downers go retire in FL. I'm excited for this, so are my peers that are all younger than a million years old.

Paperhearts, I'm not

Paperhearts, I'm not complaining about the consolidation, just the inept way Azziz handled it.

Diplomacy and Savvy? That's

Diplomacy and Savvy? That's rich! Seems to me the Azziz brand of diplomacy was "My way or the highway"...

As Riverman1 commented, it wasn't the consolidation that was the issue - it's the way it was handled that rankled so many.
