The Columbia County summer school commencement, held Friday night in the Evans High School gymnasium, gave graduates the same fanfare as the main ceremonies in May.

“It’s been a great summer,” said summer school Principal Jim Hooper, who was proud of the students for finishing. “A lot of them are still just recovering from a bad freshman year, because you can only get a credit-and-a-half in summer school. If you just totally screw up your freshman year, it takes three or four summers to make up for it.”

Evans’ Miranda Morrison struggled with math but completed the work with specific goals in mind.

“I’d rather finish late and still graduate than not finish at all and have to redo it all over again,” said Morrison, who has been accepted to Georgia Southern University and the Art Institute of Atlanta.

For Greenbrier’s Ashley Witten, it was a day filled with anticipation.

“I feel so happy, I woke up with butterflies in my stomach this morning,” said Witten, who will be heading to Georgia Military College. “I’m just ready to go on to the next step.”

Great Job!

I would like to commend EHS administrator Jim Hooper and GHS administrator Ed Williams for running a fantastic and successful summer school program this year. It was great to see so many of the county's administrators, parents, and student supporters at the graduation program. Congratulations to all of the Columbia Co. graduates for a job well-done!!
