In January, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents gave final approval to the merger and new name for the former Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities.

The athletic teams will play under the Augusta State banner until the end of the spring semester. In the fall, the school’s teams will switch to Georgia Regents University, with new logos for their uniforms.

Three of 17 logos, coordinated by the school’s communications and marketing department with an outside firm, Trend Influence/Doner, will be prominently used.

One blue-and-silver logo features a Jaguar head facing to the right. Another blue-and-silver logo displays the same Jaguar head inside a circle with the words “Georgia Regents University Augusta” around it. Another silver-and-blue logo simply states “GRU Augusta.” Other logos, some including black-and-white colors, incorporate the words “Jaguars” and “Jaguar Nation.”

“The coaches and student-athletes are excited about the direction we’re headed and how we’ll begin to represent ourselves and the university to our competitors, along with current and prospective students,” Athletic Director Clint Bryant said in a news release. “Athletics will have a look all its own – a look representative of each of our 14 men’s and women’s athletic teams and the student-athletes who compete. I’m really excited about our logos and our brand, and I am sure it will serve us well for years to come.”

Men’s golf coach Kevin McPherson, whose program won back-to-back NCAA Division I golf championships in 2010-11 wearing the school’s then-popular “A” logo on shirts and hats, echoed Bryant’s sentiments.

“This is an exciting time for the Georgia Regents University Augusta athletics department, and the unveiling comes at a perfect time for our golf program, leading up to our prestigious men’s invitational tournament and the Masters,” McPherson said in the release. “It is important to note that we have all worked together in finding the ‘perfect fit’ to brand the new university’s athletic teams. I’m honored to be a part of those decisions and look forward to the future growth of GRU Augusta.”

How much

How much did the survey cost to solicit input on this logo? Oh, wait a minute. I didn't receive a survey. No biggie. Input was not needed.

Anyone else notice

how many comments have just one thumbs down? Not only on this story, but on a lot of them. I think someone goes around and just "dislikes" comments just to dislike them. Even when they are really good comments {;-)

I believe those uniforms will

I believe those uniforms will be conducive to the teams being known simply as Augusta.

What a stupid name for a University

Augusta State sounds more scholarly than a stupid name like Georgia Regents.
re·gent :A member of a board that governs an institution, such as a state university.
So the University is now named after the board? Instead of the citizens that it serves.....ie,Augusta and State.
Total Bull

This is uglier than Roy Barnes' old Georgia flag. Terrible graphics, whatever you may think of the name.

The only thing I like about

The only thing I like about the Logo other than the Jaguar is the word Augusta. Nice that it is prominent here, but it is probably hard to find anywhere else. The school should be named Augusta State University or if it HAS to be changed to something, "Augusta Georgia University" is the clearest description that retains a hint of the lineage of the school.

Image of Azziz

To CSRA Reader,
The new logo does kinda/sorta (southern term) look like a profile of Azziz - it looks like an extremely mad mouse. The Jags will have easy wins when their opponents are falling down laughing. Only the faculty and staff at MCG and ASU fear Azziz.

Actually, I'd like to flat

Actually, I'd like to flat out ask Dr. Azziz, if he would be happy with the sports' teams being known as Augusta. If he doesn't want to answer, keep asking administrators until one of them comes up with an answer and hopefully a positive one.

Very nice...of you to put money in an Atlanta ad firm for this. Guess no firm in Augusta was cool enough.

Soooo generic. Does not grab your attention nor catch your eye. It makes me sad to think how much they paid for this crap.

Logo ...

The logo misses the mark in my opinion. The Jaguar head grom years ago should have been kept. The lettering should have been much smaller referencing the university name leaving Augusta very prominent.
And if they did use an out of town firm to create this then shame on Azziz and his administration.

There is hope.

In the next upcoming Governor Election, press every challenger to agree to do away with the GRU naming and replace a few President Azzie controlled GR board members.

Could be worse

I like it and I know I'll get tattoo'd for it. I miss the ARsenal Oak emblem though. Wish that image could be reanimated somehow even if the tree itself is in the ether.

Since it is possible to just

Since it is possible to just use the name Augusta with these uniforms, I wonder if the coaches have been given instructions of what to call the teams? Unfortunately, I have a feeling Azziz will order them not to use the word Augusta alone. I'm fairly confident other teams in the conference and the press will just use "Augusta."

We should have kept the A and

We should have kept the A and told Azziz that it stood for "Azziz". Now we are gonna be the laughed at by the rest of the peach belt with our generic logo. Of course Bryant says he lies it. He has to or he doesnt have a job. No one has been able to stand up to this CRAP. Always ASU

Can I trade my GRU Points for Augusta Points?

The only good think about this ugly cat logo is that it displays the word "Augusta".
The pure white eye is disconcerting. At least add a black dot so it looks realer.
