Samuel Sullivan, a retired vice president at the former ASU, was named by Paine on Tuesday. The move comes less than one day after Marcus Tillery, who served as Paine’s provost and vice president for academic affairs since June 2011, left the college without explanation.

Vice President of Institutional Advancement Brandon Brown would not say if Tillery was fired or resigned from the position.

“It is the policy of the institution not to comment on personnel matters,” Brown said at a news conference Tuesday.

Sullivan retired from ASU in August 2011 with 40 years of experience in higher education.

Along with working as the vice president for academic affairs, Sullivan also served on the 2011 executive vice president and provost search committee, the academic vice president’s council, as an ex-officio trustee and led the implementation of the university’s strategic planning initiatives, according to Paine College.

Sullivan has a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from North Carolina Central University and master’s and doctorate degrees in physics from Howard University.

“Dr. Sullivan brings a wealth of experience in the higher education arena,” Brown said. “He is bringing an expertise to the college … and we are very fortunate to have a person of his caliber to be joining the Paine College team.”

As provost, Sullivan is responsible for leading the academic direction of the college, including instruction and curriculum. He also leads the academic professors and faculty and sets policy.

Sullivan will be the direct supervisor of Tina Marshall Bradley, the associate vice president of academic affairs, who is married to Paine President George Bradley.

Brown said the college avoids having Tina Bradley report to the president because of their relationship and instead uses the provost in that role.

“The associate vice president of academic affairs is removed from being supervised by the president,” Brown said.

It is about time Paine starts to clean house!

Nothing against the institution but those folks have had too much negative publicity lately. They need to get back to the basics of education and learn to manage their assets in a more professional manner!

Good luck to a better future without so much negative press!
