Snider, who scored 2390 on the SAT, was chosen from among the seven Columbia County public and private high school winners during the 52nd annual STAR Student reception at the Harlem Women’s Club.
“It’s fantastic,” said Evans High School Principal Don Brigdon. “He is a wonderful young man, very respectful, he’s involved in everything; he handles everything in such a dignified way.”
Snider, the drum major of the Evans High Marching Band, also is president of the school’s Math Honor Society and a member of the math team.
“I’m very proud of Mr. Snider,” said District 2 School Board member Kristi Baker, an Evans High band parent and, with Snider’s family, a fellow resident of the Springlakes neighborhood in Martinez. “We’re just ecstatic; he’s so deserving.”
Snider chose as his STAR teacher Pam Sellers, who taught him Accelerated Math 3 in 11th grade.
When she first met Snider as a high-schooler, Sellers remembered that he had been in her car pool for Little League practice.
“I’ve actually watched William grow up, learn and mature,” Sellers said. “William is a wonderful thinker, and math comes so easily to him. He sees it. Having William in class kept me on my toes.”
Snider also follows in the footsteps of his sister, Christina, a 2010 graduate of Evans who also was the school’s STAR student, said his father, Herman Snider. She’s now an honor student at Vanderbilt.
Snider said he’s been accepted to the University of Chicago, but hasn’t committed to attending. He’s also unsure about his major, but likely will study business administration, he said.
The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program is sponsored statewide by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. School-level winners score highest on one administration of the standardized test, and also must be in the top 10 percent of their class.
Snider will go on to compete for region STAR honors and, if successful, state STAR.
Other school STAR students and teachers honored Thursday were:
• Erick Sostre, Augusta Christian Schools, and STAR teacher Mike Giddens.
• Drew Chamberlain, Augusta Preparatory Day School, and STAR teacher Tim Shafer.
