“This is a high honor for every student and for the student’s STAR teacher,” said John C. Bell Jr., an Augusta lawyer and the program organizer for 35 years, in a letter about the event.

The program is sponsored by the Augusta Kiwanis Club. The county’s 2013 STAR student and teacher will be named during the event, which features guest speaker Michael Thurmond, who served for more than 16 years as Georgia’s Commissioner of Labor.

The STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) program is sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Professional Association of Georgia Educators and the Georgia Department of Education.

To be nominated, high school seniors must have the highest SAT score and be in the top 10 percent of their class. Each student is asked to name his STAR teacher.

In Richmond County, STAR students and teachers were named from 13 schools.
