Meeting Thursday, the board agreed to the move to ensure there will be an armed, certified officer at each county school.
Superintendent Jim Lebrun said he hoped to have the officers available for board approval at the February meeting.
He said this is part of an upgrade of school security. Having an armed security officer in each school was something the school system had been working on months before the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.
At Thursday’s meeting, the board also approved 15 chapters of the McDuffie County Schools Department of Public Safety Procedures Manual. The chapters will be posted on the school system Web site for public review.
