Episcopal Day School officials told parents Thursday it had purchased 28 acres of land on Flowing Wells Road.
Headmaster Ned Murray said that the school is not moving from Walton Way but that the land will be used as an expansion to the campus, perhaps for athletics and science.
Murray said the school bought the land for $1.15 million from Queensborough National Bank & Trust.
“We have a long history of a commitment to experiential education, the kind of education that occurs outside the classrooms that enriches what goes on inside the classroom, and having this property will really facilitate our ability to do that,” Murray said.
The school will now embark on a design process that could take five months to complete, which will identify specific plans for the ground. After that is complete, a fundraising campaign will be launched.
Murray said the school borrowed most of the money to buy the land, which will be repaid through that capital campaign, along with raising the money to develop the campus expansion.
The 67-year-old school at 2248 Walton Way has about 400 students.
