The center will support academic programs — initially radiation protection technology, nuclear quality systems, welding and mechatronics — that are crucial to supporting the area’s growing manufacturing, nuclear and energy workforce needs.
Those courses are being taught from older facilities on campus.
Aiken Tech also received a $2 million grant this year from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to help build the facility, but the grant requires a $2 million match from other sources.
The school has raised more than $1 million toward that goal. The $60,000 represents a three-year pledge by WSI-SRS, which has donated $20,000 of that sum.
WSI-SRS is a subsidiary of security contractor G4S Government Solutions, based in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
